We arrived at Vila Pedra Mar after 10 days in Brazil, during which we had found the country to be scenically stunning but the hospitality to be over-priced and lacking creativity or thought. Most of the poussadas we stayed in were purely functional, and they charged an excessive amount for such basic functionality. Vila Pedra Mar was the exception to this rule and we knew from the moment we had arrived that we had found the place we had been looking for the whole trip. Everything had been finished to a fantastically high standard, from the linen and bed to the bathroom furnishings. Sarie and Jo are clearly very aware of all the little things that help contribute to making one feel luxuriated, relaxed and comfortable. Unfortunately, this is not something I can, from my personal experience, readily say about their Brazilian counterparts.
We found the hospitality at Vila Pedra Mar to be very warm and welcoming. Riann, Karien, Jo and Sarie all made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Nothing was ever too much effort or too much trouble. The food was homely and always delicious. They looked after us in such a way that lacked the over-bearing stuffiness or pretence that is often associated with more luxurious accommodation. It was a more relaxed and genuine approach, one in which they seemed to really enjoy hosting, taking enjoyment from their guests enjoyment. We were guests in their home, rather than guests in a hotel, and we really enjoted meeting the family and getting to know them over several caipirinhas and beers.
To summarise, Vila Pedra Mar and Ilha Grande was, by a long way, our favourite place in Brazil. The island has a serenity and calmness to it which we didn't find anywhere else, I think largely due to the lack of any cars and subsequently people. The sounds of the jungle at night were magical. The colour and tempertaure of the water were idyllic, as were the multiple beaches we came across and the fantastic snorkelling to be done right off the deck. It has the feel to it of a paradise island that has yet to become overrun with tourism in the way some of the Thai islands already have. Long may it stay this way. We found Vila Pedra Mar to be totally deserving of all of its five star reviews. With breakfast and dinner included in the price it is incredible value by Brazilian standards, good value by the standards we have experienced elsewhere. Value aside, it is just an exceptionally great place to wile away your holiday, and it is run by exceptionally warm people. We would thoroughly recommend, and will almost certainly return.
