Afton is like a place on the plains, you expect a windstorm any time. In a storm, you look for any shelter.
The Lazy B is an old-fashioned motor court, with rooms on two sides, the owner's living quarters along one side and the road along the open end. It is a little surprising, then, to find the rooms refurbished, clean and neat. The bed arrangements in the rooms can be a bit unusual, but that's what old fashioned means: idiosyncratic. That goes for the laminated signs on colored paper scattered around on the appliances and walls, too: faintly scolding messages from the proprietor, reminding you of what you ought to know, assuming you were raised that way.
The housekeeping is very good in the new baths and, in the rooms with an eastern-facing bath, you get a real bright morning light through the frosted glass blocks to shower and shave by.
A note for those on two wheels (motorcycle and bicycle): the owner has a tiny pack of friendly dogs (about four), that are neurotic about us. They bark - apparently just at the bikes. They seem to be ok, but it was a tiny bit unnerving when I rolled up late afternoon. Owner keeps them in when everyone is packing up in the morning, so not really a bother. That's what old fashioned means, too: love me, love my dog.
