“Many different attractions to be seen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

Itaipu Dam has a lot of different things to offer to the visitors. Their best attraction is the guided tour inside the dam, where you'll be able to see it in details.

I took the panoramic tour twice, one during the day and one during the night, and actually they're quite different, although i preferred the nightvisit.

on the panoramic tour during the day, you circle throughout the whole dam, with 2 stops to take some quick pictures, one in front of the Dam and the other above, after passing just in front of the many huge water turbines and above the spillway (which was not open, sadly).

During the night visit, you won't go to the upper part of the Dam, but will be able to see a mini show with some music as they start to light up the Dam! It is a very beautiful and impressive show which i'd recommend to everyone. And when you get to the bus, go to the upper deck and stay on the eastern seats of the bus in order to be closer to the huge turbines as the bus passes in front of them.

“Super Power - tips for travelers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

Tips.
A) During weekends and holidays you might want to arrive a earlier than planned.
B) Can get there taking public green bus in Foz de Iguazu bus terminal (BRL 2.90). Ask for Itaipu.
C) Several options are offered to visitors. The basic ride is visiting the exterior of the dam in double-deck bus. It takes about 1.5 hrs.
D) For the ride above the bus will stop twice in specific spots for pictures. Find snacks and service rooms and the first stop. (why Itaipu don't swap stops? first stop is just 5 minutes after leaving main the building. next opportunity for food services will 1 hr 25 minutes after!).
E) Narration in Portuguese and Spanish, can not tell if available in other languages.
F) The coffee shop in the main serves good food and prices are affordable.
G) Attend the video before the ride, very inspiring.
H) Long haired visitors might consider bringing a hat, will face strong winds during the ride.

“Amazed by its extention and history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

Do take the special tour last time available (4.30 pm) and then the night tour (immediately after, at 7.30). In the special tour you will not only get the panoramic view of the whole dam and reservoir but also get to go inside the Usina and visit its control center and enormous turbines. It takes around 2h but it is not tiring at all. Whatever the guide says about its history is simply fascinating and intriguing. You will want to remember that information forever... how the energy is slip between Brazil and Paraguay, the construction site, workers... After that tour you can have a coffee at the touristic center cafe while waiting for the next tour: the lighting if the dam. Picture this: classical music soundtrack in the middle of an infinite blackness. Suddenly millions of lights start to light up the dam's walls, then each of the 20 turbines. At the end your eyes can´t believe the beauty of the place. One of the greatest deeds in the history of engineering. So you know: the iron and steel used would allow for the construction of 380 Eiffel Towers!!!!

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

If you're interested in engineering then you'll love this tour. The dam is quite a marvel, and the technical tour that goes inside and visits the turbines and control room is well worth it.

“LIGHT SHOW NOT WORTH IT”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

The lights show at 8pm on the weekends takes about one hour with the bus ride. You can't see much on the bus and the light show is only a few minutes long and very anticlimactic. It takes forever to get to the dam if you don't have a rental car and take the bus. For R14 it wasn't worth it at all.

Should have stayed in that night.
