“AWESOME HOTEL...LOT OF ACTIVITIES!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2011

We came here to visit family in Ashland...the plan was to spend the night and then drive down to Wisconsin Dells for a few days. There is so much to do here! Out behind the hotel they have ladder ball, monster checkers, fishing, campfire with smores every night, croquet, swimming, paddle boats, a patio for just sitting and enjoying the ambiance. The sunsets from their patio are totally awesome. they have bicycles you can use and a basketball hoop. They have a nice video game arcade. The breakfast buffet was ok...if your trying to save money, its included and it's acceptable...I would suggest the Breakers restaurant just down the street....cheap and excellent. Also if you need dinner...try a place called Frankie's pizza. try the stuffed crust pizza. Incredible! They have onsite coin-op washer and dryer. They sell bait (nightcrawlers) at the service desk. There's a walmart less than a mile away. there's also a casino less than 10 miles away. I thought their nightly rate (AAA rate) was fantastic for all the ameniities...This is as close to a resort hotel as it gets. We ended up staying 4 nights, and plan to return next year. very well managed, excellent value, fun hotel... I might add that im rather particular about the beds...their was top notch newer bedding very comfortable.

At the last minute my family and I decided to go to Bayfield for the weekend. All the B & B s were booked and so were the hotels in Bayfield. So...I looked and found AmericInn in Ashland. No poor ratings. So I gave a try. And I was not disappointed. If you need a place to sleep and shower. It fits the bill very well. Also if you have younger kids, they have a great indoor pool with slide. Sauna and hot tubs for adults. They do provide what they call breakfast, but not much there. We went down the street to a restaurant for breakfast.

Room Tip: Our room had a balcony facing the lake. Nice view.

After reading reviews that the on-site water park was shabby, I wasn't planning to stay at this property. I was traveling with my husband and kids in a very busy tourism area, however, and we decided to start our drive back to Michigan from Duluth without making reservations. Thinking we'd just "wing it" and try for a room along the way. After ALL of the small towns we stopped in had completely booked hotels, we were feeling pretty stuck by the time we arrived in Ashland. It was late and kids were crabby. We stopped at this hotel and though it was very busy, they had a vacancy!

We were very impressed with the friendliness of the front desk staff (even though they were swamped). The property isn't the newest in terms of decor, but appeared very well taken care of and clean. The lobby had a social feel and snacks-drinks were for sale in the lobby and view of water park through the window. Our room was very spacious and clean. Beds comfortable. Breakfast area was very comfortable and lots of good choices--waffles were great! The water park is small, but my kids had a good time. There was a lifeguard on duty. I would definitely stay here again.

We reserved a room @ this hotel when re travelled to N. WI & UP recently. We come to the region every year & love it, but the hotels are always lacking. There isn't much competition (or demand?) for anything above a two star hotel. This wouldn't normally be a problem for us, but up north, with possibly awful, or equally possible gorgeous weather, it is always good to have an alternative, indoor plan.
Allow me to be clear: this IS a 2 star hotel from the point of view of the room. It is basic, yet large, unattractive & basically clean. So, if you are a couple or solo traveller, this hotel is overpriced for you. The excellent part is that it offers so many fun extras for the kids. The water park has 3 pools, two slides...etc. There is the free breakfast half of America seems to love, but that we usually ignore. They do have the WAFFLE machines here...better than the prepackaged donuts & stale tea (you'd think breakfast specials down the road weren't $4.99!).
They also have s'mores during the evening in the back & the view in the back is the best we've ever seen from this category of hotel. Lake Superior is so beautiful! There was a young employee out back strumming guitar & singing campfire type songs. There is also a dock & grassy hill area that leads to a little beach. Very cool.
We declare this hotel the best for families in the lake superior area & will probably return next summer.

Room Tip: Get the lakeview!

Thanks for sharing your comments about your stay here. You are right about the weather here –could be great or not so, and you are smart to have the backup, indoor plan, just in case. And even though our area is another South Beach, we prefer the name South Shore, as we are not trying to be anything glitzy or fast paced. We are glad you and your family were able to enjoy yourselves during your stay with us and hope you will keep us in mind for another rainy (or snowy!) day.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our time at the AmericInn in Ashland. When we arrived, we were promptly greeted by a friendly front-desk worker; check-in was a breeze and she made sure to let us know that paddleboats and bikes were available for rental, that there was a private beach behind the hotel, and that complimentary s'mores were available from 7-9pm on the patio. Our room was standard - it was in the older section of the hotel, but it was spacious enough with two queen beds and a sofa sleeper. It could probably use some updated decor but it was in decent shape and clean. There was a patio outside our room overlooking Lake Superior - the view was gorgeous. It was also quite quiet at night - we were located adjacent to an entrance/exit and barely heard anything all night long.

After dinner (we highly recommend the Deepwater Grille on Main St.) we decided to use the waterpark. For a waterpark on the smaller side, it had plenty of things for our family of 5 to do. There are two waterslides and both are fun (this mom went down each of them more than once!). The kiddie pool features water jets and a small slide that our 3 year old could not get enough of. Then there is another pool (max depth of 5 feet) that has a basketball hoop at one end. There is also a whirlpool and sauna, but we didn't have the chance to enjoy either of them, though they looked nice.

After a brief shower passed through the area, we decided to have a s'more on the patio and explore the beach behind the hotel. What a nice find! The grassy area near the patio features all sorts of lawn games. The patio itself is well supplied with tables and chairs, as well as mosquito spray (a thoughtful touch). The beach is down a small path and hill from the hotel's patio. There is a fishing pier (with poles available to use), many comfortable lounge chairs, and a roped off swimming area. My kids had so much fun swimming in the lake and beachcombing - we stayed out and watched the sun set over Lake Superior and we had to drag the kids back to the room when it got too dark out.

The breakfast we had mixed opinions on. As far as the food goes, there were a lot of options and all that we sampled (waffles, toast, pastries, cereal, biscuits & gravy) were good. The breakfast room attendant worked very hard at making sure that everything was kept well stocked and clean. The only downside is that seating was limited. There is an additional seating area outside, and that was what we used the first morning, but there are a fair amount of bugs (it's outside and it's summer and there's food - I'm not sure the bug situation can be helped) and that bothered my kids. The seating area might not be a problem in off-season times, but during the summer rush, you probably need to get there early to get a seat.

In all, we completely enjoyed our time at the AmericInn Ashland. It was almost like a full-resort experience if you consider all the amenities available to guests. As we were pulling out of the driveway, we all agreed that we could have easily spent another day or two at this hotel and not have experienced all there was to offer. If you're planning a Lake Superior vacation (Bayfield/Madeline Island are just a short drive away) anytime soon, your family will enjoy this hotel!

Thank you for taking the time to write and submit your very thorough review of our hotel and area. And the photos, too. I’m so glad you and your family enjoyed the time you spent here. We are completely remodeling the rooms in our original building, and they will all have new case-goods, carpet & drapes before the end of the year. We hope you will be our guest again and see the improvements.

We stayed at Americinn, Ashland, Wisconsin, after the 4th of July, 2011. Overall, we enjoyed the hotel. They offer some nice amenities, such as an outdoor patio overlooking Lake Superior, and smores and outdoor games for children and adults. They have paddleboats available depending on the weather.

The hotel has a new and an old part. My wife found our room, which was located in the old part, to smell stale and mildewy. The room was clean, nevertheless, the smell was still there. I would recommend asking for a room in the newer part of the hotel.

The breakfast area is very small, and with a full hotel, you may have to wait for a table. The staff was courteous and friendly, and kept up with the high demand quite well. The carpet by the waffle maker had seen numerous spills and sorely needed a cleaning.

The water park/pool has many problems. The staff in the waterpark is also friendly and courteous. There are some problems with the area. The emergency door is always left open (it leads to a patio and the game area outside). People walk in and out and track dirt and mud into the pool area. When the lifeguard takes a break, the water slide area is closed down. We wonder why they couldn't turnover lifeguard duty and keep the slide open.

The little snack bar inside the waterpark area is open when the pool is. We ordered pizzas and a chicken sandwich for our family of 5 one night we were there. There was one person working at the snack bar, and many orders. The refrigerator in the snack bar was broken this night as reported to me by the employee. The lifeguard came over to help with orders, but did not understand how to make the pizzas, and got two out of the three pizzas we ordered wrong. One pizza had no cheese on it! The food took approximately 45 minutes to make.

The water slides only have a low volume of water going down them, which make them less fun than other water park/hotels we have stayed at.

Bottom line for this hotel...friendly people, but very understaffed. I would ask questions about the side of the hotel you will stay on, I would ask for a followup on staffing levels for the pool and snack bar, and I would also ask why they have a labeled emergency door that remains open at all times. Show up early for the breakfast area, or you may have a crowd in a very small space.

Room Tip: Ask for the newer side of thehotel

Price was good, room was nice and large (we stayed in a room with two queens and a hide-a-bed). Patio off the back of room had a beautiful view. They served s'mores in the evening out back & even though the hotel has a small waterpark that is included in the price of the room, they also have a small swim beach. Our room had a slight odor and the bathroom floor and carpet didn't look as clean as it should, but it wasn't bad enough to warrant going to the front desk. I would definitely give this hotel another shot if I was in the area. It has a lot of things going for it. Breakfast was free and was adequate. Bed was a little hard.
