We were told that Aram Yami means Sun/Night in an indigeonous local dialect.
And indeed it is, a little jewel amidst rumbles and ruins hidden between paved narrow streets in San Antonio, only 10 minutes away from Pelourinho Historical Center.
Aram Yami has 5 very unique, spacious and distinctive suites/rooms (a true work of love), 2 infinity pools with furnished decks (one of each belonging to the largest suite). We were so lucky as to stay a whole week at the panoramic-room overlooking the beautiful and mistical city. Breakfasts were amazing with both continental and local specialties on the menu, delicious fresh squeezed-juices, tropical fruits, ... My sister and I couldn't get enough of tapiocas, a local specialty, a sort of crepe or nem served either sweet or salty.
A most welcoming and attentive staff plus daily briefings from Jakub made it easier for us to plan our activities in Pelourinho and its surroundings and that way to discover even more hidden treasures throughout the city.
We went to as many local Axe, Samba, Olodun concerts as possible so now we are almost experts hahahah ...
Once again thank you to Jakub, Henrique, Sergio, and the two lovely women working at the kitchen (sorry we forgot the names)
Highly recommended!

We chose this hotel for our stay in Salvador based on other reviews and were not disappointed. This is a really lovely hotel where we were made to feel welcome from the minute we arrived. Jakub and the rest of the staff all spoke excellent English and were very helpful and informative on what to see and where to go. With only five rooms and plenty of staff you feel really spoiled by the level of attention. The room was great beautifully restored with a four poster bed. I tried the 'infinity pool' one evening which has lovely views across the harbour. As with all boutique hotels there's no evening meal but the breakfast was very well presented. In terms of evening meals two suggestions: for meat lovers (me) we went to Boi Preto (Black Bull) and for fish lovers (my wife ) Yemanja (try the Mariscada). Both are about 20 mins away by cab although beware of rush hour, it took over an hour at 6pm. For lunch the Villa Bahia Hotel near the Church of San Fransisco was good. While many comment on the safety of Salvador we both felt the City feels safe, there is a big police presence and people are genuinely friendly. While the taxis were all very good we used the cab service provided by the hotel both to take us to and from the airport and also to take us around to see some sites. Nilton our driver gave a first class friendly tour. It was expensive R$90 (about £28) but well worth it. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Aram Yami for two nights to explore Salvador, and couldn't have asked for a better welcome. Jakub was very attentive and gave us an overview of the city with key sights to see, restaurants and put as at ease in a city where most people may feel a little out of place - especially as English is not widely spoken. The surrounding area (part of the Pelourinho - Unesco World Heritage Site) may seem run down and unsafe to a virgin visitor but Jakub ensured we know where to go and we didn't feel unsafe walking around during the day or night - particularly useful as the day we had a tour guide booked he turned up 4 hours late! The breakfast was lovely and again Jakub encouraged us to try some local dishes which we would otherwise have missed out on. We stayed in the Panoramic room which was huge with a terrace on both sides, the bed was comfortable and the quirky design details made for an interesting stay. Two nights was enough for us to explore Salvador and would recommend it as a stopover. It would be interesting to see how it has changed post the Football World Cup and Olympics.

This is likely the first time in many years that I've felt the overwhelming number of tripadvisor reviews did not steer me right.

Pros:
* Very nice staff and ownership - as many people have commented, the staff is quite nice and helpful and very multilingual
* Nice rooms - the professional photos are fair, with the exception that the view from the pools is much more urban and includes a lot of the port / ships / less desirable views

Cons:
* HUGE MOSQUITO INFESTATION - Our $250 USD/night room was infested with mosquitoes. The bedding has nets around the side (but not on the top!!) and literally we both woke up with ~50 - 100 mosquito bites and looked like we belonged in a lepur colony. I have stayed in very mosquito prone regions in Africa and else where and have never had this experience. Proper hotels address this issue and it was a MAJOR negative. We literally had to sleep in bug repellant AND with a fan blowing on us our second night just to avoid this issue.

* The location - I actually very much disagree with others that this hotel is ideally located. It's approximately 15 - 25 minutes (depending on your walking pace) from the main square which is much safer and populated at night. I would never in million years dream of walking that deserted path at night, and the cab drivers didn't seem to the know the hotel or the area. The area felt very unsafe, even when compared with the main square. There are several hotels closer to the main square, and I'd recommend one of those for your money. The street is more or less deserted during the day and entirely at night, and that's not ideal for vacation time / walking / getting around.

AramYami, Gerente at Aram Yami Hotel, responded to this review, September 12, 2013
Good morning,
From the Hotel Aram Yami we want to thank you to take some time to provide feedback and we want to respond to your concerns.
1: Regarding the issue of mosquitoes, the hotel has always counted from the day of its opening, with mosquito fabrics to put on the beds if the guest requires. We have never received a complaint such this one during the 7 years since the opening of the hotel. Since it is a tropical country, you need to should understand that mosquitoes are present, this is clear. The main problem we believe from the Hotel, it was the lack of communication between you, the guests, and our reception or vice versa. Because if any mentioned the problem when it ocurred, we would have placed the mosquito fabrics for your next 2 nights. We want to explain you that after receiving your critique, we decided to put the mosquito fabrics on the beds fixed although is not be as nice as without them.
2: Regarding the issue of the location, commenting only that we are exactly 10 minutes from Pelourinho area and are those streets and houses, bars and shops, which made that UNESCO declared World Heritage, also its history, obviously. For safety, from the Hotel always recommend taxi back after 20:00 pm to avoid possible problems, although the neighborhood where our hotel is located, is the most safe and quiet throughout the city of Salvador de Bahia.
We sincerely hope from the hotel you can understand us and nothing would please us more in the future if you return to the city again, that be stay with us in our hotel and could check the explained above improvements and offer new tours around the historical center and around the magnificent Salvador too.
Sincerely,
Aram Yami Hotel Management

This hotel is outstanding. My husband and I spent a month touring around South America on our honeymoon and this was the best hotel we stayed in. Not the most expensive one but certainly the best one. There are five rooms, all different, all unique. We had the panoramic suite with two balconies showcasing two different amazing views. I had mentioned it was our honeymoon and when we arrived there were rose petals all over the bedroom floor and a bottle of champagne waiting for us. For all guests when you check in you are offered a plate of beautiful fruit. The room was absolutely amazing, the common areas of the hotel were also superb and the security is excellent. We were given another room on our last day to have a shower in and change before our late departure that evening. The hotel is ideally located ona safe street in the middle of the historical city. I have left the best two things about this hotel until last - the staff and the breakfast. The staff are INCREDIBLE. Quite simply there is nothing that is too much trouble for Jakub and the team. They are friendly, efficient, thoughtful and unbelievably helpful. The breakfast is made in front of you by a local bahian and it is the best breakfast selection I have ever had. Seriously delicious. As a by the way all food in the mini bar or delivered to the room is the same price as if you were having it downstairs. It is very reasonably priced. If you are going to Salvador you need to stay at this hotel. I promise you won't regret it.

Room Tip: The Panoramic Suite is fab!!

Just spent 4 nights at the Aram Yami and can't speak highly enough of the hospitality and ambience. The property is a small pousada style hotel in Santo Antonio adjacent to Pelourinho, the historic centre of the City. It's a very good location in a quiet street with an easy walk to Pelhourinho. There are many restaurants and bars and a range of interesting galleries and museums all within relatively close proximity.

Management of the hotel is overseen by Jakub and his colleagues who are amongst the most hospitable and personable individuals you are likely to meet! Nothing is too much trouble for them and yet they are never intrusive. Small touches like the plate of fresh fruit waiting for us each day on our return and the loan of an umbrella make all the difference. We also asked the hotel to arrange our transfer to and from the airport - something we normally do ourselves - and on this occasion were very glad we did as the driver, a friend of the hotel, gave us a whistle-stop introduction to Salvador on the way in and Bahian music on the way back!

The Aram Yami website is a very accurate reflection of what you can expect there and I would suggest looking at the layout drawings to help select your room as they're all quite different. The hotel has been nicely restored with a communal sitting and breakfast area in the centre with a balcony overlooking the port and the bay. We stayed in the Panoramic Suite which I would thouroughly recommend. This room is on the top floor and has a terrace overlooking the water at the front and a second rear terrace overlooking the old town. With a glass roofed shower, it's quirky and comfortable!

Breakfast is fantastic with lots of home-made options, including mousses and brownies, and of course healthier choices!

Salvador is a really interesting place to visit, whether wandering round Pelourinho which has world heritage site status, or visiting the waterfront and shopping at Barra or the art museums in Vitoria and the markets in the lower city area. Whatever your interests, Aram Yami provides a great base from which to explore!

Room Tip: Check the drawings on the website. Higher floors have best views.
