“Very beautiful church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013 via mobile

This is one of the most famous example of the portuguese presence in Brasil and the influence of the religion on century XVIII. A lot of gold and beautiful sculptures.

“Gorgeous Church!”

If you only see one church in Salvador, this is the one you should visit. It is stunning and well worth the stop! The paintings and art work located throughout the church is just amazing!

“Glitzy-glitzy!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

Although dedicated to a patron saint of the poor, this church is by far the most ornate I 've ever seen-and I've had my fair share of churches ! Not a single square centimeter is left unadorned ,it is all golden and sculpted ! The impression one has when entering is simply astounding; one is left flabbergasted, even if not a christian-or a catholic for that matter!
We were givem ample explanations by a man whom we would have thought a beggar: guess what - he spoke one of the best English in Salvador and he used to be a teacher.
As you enter the church pay attention to the ceiling of the first room: it includes a good painting in anamorphosis which you can easily miss if you don't know what to look for.

“The decorations in the chapel make St Peter's look rather drab.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

The monastery is fascinating, especially with blend of Delft and Portuguese tiling in the cloisters. The chapel is astonishing: superb carvings, gleaming under the weight of gold leaf and managing to make so many other churches look pedestrian.
