Definitely recommend Pousada Azul. Great atmosphere, excellent/friendly service, not dirt cheap, but good value. The rooms are charming and quiet, location is excellent. Owner speaks English.

The pousada has a great value, very clean and the staff is very serviceminded.
It feels like staying with friends where they take care of you and is always available 24 hours a day.
The Breakfast is great with all the things you need to start the day and the beach is only two blocks away.
If you are a couple this is better than hotel and if you are a solotraveller that seek the comfortness of a hotel but more cheapier,This is for you

I would echo the previous reviews about this pousada.
The all female staff is courteous and helpful but only speak Portugese except for the owner(?) who only seems to be there for an hour or two in the late morning. The rooms are spartan but very clean, with both fans and aircon. Staying at two different times, I had a room on the top floor in the front and one one the ground floor in the back. The front room was noisier but brighter. The road in front is not a main street but has many buses during the day.
The neighbourhood is a bit of a mix, highrises with gatehouses and fences on one hand and drunks passed out in the square next to the beach on the other.
The breakfast is fine and the internet is free.
Be careful in Salvador, There are places that are safe and places that aren't (I had my camera snatched). Pousada Azul is a bit of a haven.

Top little spot in the Barra area - accommodation is basic but comfortable, clean and secure, very friendly and helpful staff, manager speaks good English, very nice breakfast, close to a gorgeous beach and a good outdoor live music and dance venue with plenty of food stalls and cold beer. Handy for frequent buses into the downtown area. What more do you need? Traffic noise from sreet in early morning is only downside.

Pousada Azul is staffed entirely by women, who keep the place clean comfortable and secure. With the exception of the rooms on the street side which have to put up with the noisy buses passing by, the pousada is quiet and private. The breakfast is bountiful, and free wi-fi is a bonus for the wired traveller.

I stayed at the Pousada Azul with my husband during Carnaval in 2010 and I am so glad I chose this place instead of a Hotel! Our room vas spacious and clean with a fan and a private bathroom (I requested the one with a fan only since I don't like having the air conditioner on all night, but I think they offer both options). This Pousada was perfect - walking distance to the beach and to the main Carnaval Route in Barra. Beatriz is the owner and she helped us save a ton of money by giving us local tips and suggestions about the things to do. One of the most valuable ones was to go pipoca on the first night of the Carnaval to check things out before spending money on the abada. Another great tip was to take a day trip where they take you to different islands to experience the beaches along the bay (If you go to Morro de Sao Paulo DO NOT do a day trip as you will spend most of your time traveling and will not have time to enjoy the island…if you are short on time stick with the option Beatriz recommends istead where the boat takes you to a couple of beaches around the bay).

Pros:
The Pousada is very cozy and our room was spacious and clean
The owner Beatriz is super friendly full of great recommendations (she speaks English)
Breakfast was excellent and all of the girls working at the Pousada were friendly and very helpful as well
Great place to meet people - the atmosphere of the place is excellent
Booking process was smooth - no issues with PayPal or confirmations about the type of room I booked
Great location - about 7 -10 minutes from one of the best beaches in Barra, walking distance to the Carnaval Route, and 10-15 minute to Shopping Barra where you buy your Abada's or take the public bus to get to Old Town, the Port, or beaches around Salvador
Free WiFi - there are 2 computers available in the common area that anyone can use
They can arrange for transfer to and from Airport (we used them both times)

Cons:
Windows do not have mosquito nets, so don't forget to bring your strong mosquito repellent
Some of the rooms don't have TV's in the bedroom areas (was not a problem for me, but my husband likes to watch TV in bed)

We did pay a premium during Carnaval week, but the Pousada Azul's prices were very competitive and our stay was worth every penny.
