“The worst experience in my traveling live”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2009

I had reserved a room at Sol Barra Hotel from 15 to 20 July 2009. The reservation was made through Hotelopia. When I arrived at the Hotel Sol Barra, the reservation was not available and I had to pay twice for the only night I stayed there. Meanwhile Hotelopia collected all the expenses for the hotel in advance.
Sol Barra is a bad hotel with stained sheets, appalling bathrooms, and out of service phone service.
Food is also bad, above all the one they deliver to rooms.

Stayed at the Sol Barra Express during Carnaval in February 2008 for five nights. Repeatedly told the Front Desk of the problem and nothing was ever done; even told our tour operator (Tours Gone Wild) and they never followed up on the problem. Very discouraged when I finally realized the last night that they knew the air conditioner didn't work and never intended to fix the air conditioner.

  • Liked — close to the starting place for Carnaval Blocos
  • Disliked — non-working air conditioner

The hotel itself is situated right across from one of the main beaches in Barra. It is a pretty basic hotel, yet very clean and well maintained. I found the staff to be very helpful, polite and personal in their approach; to be expected whilst travelling in Brazil.

The food at the hotel was quite good and I was pleasantly surprised with the variation on offer. However I was not expecting too much, I was there to experience Carnival and had already lowered my expectations below that, to what I'm usually accustomed in order to experience the party atmosphere.

Whilst there the hotel organised a pool party; and I have to acknowledge that the music (especially the performance of the lead singer) was out of this world! The guy did a non-stop set for about 5 to 6 hours in 35 degree, equatorial sun without breaking a sweat whilst "dancing his [--] off!"

The only downer I can remember from the hotel was the lack of public area air conditioning; but that didn't really bother me as I'm from Rossendale in East Lancashire, England and it's always red hot over here, all year round!

I did feel that I paid over the odds for the weeks stay, but I imagine that I was paying a premium for the carnival stay. To be honest when you are there for Carnival then the hotel is only used for the bed and nothing else.

During Carnival the hotel boards-up the front entrance for security purposes. Security is a big deal in Salvador during the Carnival. If you are going, don't even bother taking your jewels, gold and watches with you.

  • Liked — Location was adjacent to the start of the Carnival circuit
  • Disliked — I like my luxaries when travelling and the Sol Barra Express is a little more on the practicle side.

The best that can be said about this hotel is its location near the small beach of Barra, Salvador.

This is a hotel where the big tour agencies dump bus loads of tourist who bought a cheap travel package. The place is a rundown, multistory hotel with zero personality. The service is poor. The lobby area is dirty, the rugs are soiled and haven’t been cleaned for months (see photos). The reception has one person working the desk, and if you get behind a large group you could wait an hour to check in.

When we arrived, we asked for a 'matrimonial' room and were put in a room with a very small bed. This single+1/2 bed had a single size sheet on it. It could not be tucked under the mattress, thus, during the night the sheet would roll up and by morning we were exposed to the mattress. The pillows were lumpy, old and smelled. We complained the next morning and were moved to a room with a double bed. It had the same sheet problem. We complained but nothing changed. At breakfast we were with more than a hundred tourist, who, like locusts swarmed the small buffet leaving us the remains.

This is a hotel that has nothing, nothing, except the location going for it (do be aware that this area is risky at night). It is evident that the owners have decided to wring as much out of the hotel as possible, while giving back as little as possible to those that use it. NOT recommended.

  • Liked — the beach
  • Disliked — Dirty, Bad Service, Bad Food, just about everything but the location.
