“A lovely, warm and welcoming place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

This hotel is a wonderful find right in the middle of the Historic Centre in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The hotel is quirky and funky, with it’s rustic style and we felt our person and our belongings were safe here.
We took a taxi from the airport, but later learned there is a bus which is a mere fraction of the cost, we paid approx. 109 reals whereas another guest staying in the same area paid about 3 reals by bus, so if you speak Portuguese, investigate this upon your arrival.
The hotel it’s self is a renovated listed building, it’s close to all the action and in a location for carnival. We were able to navigate the local area and found that it’s about 5-10mins walk from docks where we were able to catch a boat to the neighbouring island of Morro De Sau Paulo, a paradise (place you must try to visit if staying here).
Breakfast is included in the rate and you will not be disappointed. In face we found that out of the 5 hotels we stayed in throughout our visit to Brazil, this hotel provided the best spread and didn’t charge us for extras, like eggs made to order.
Hotel staff are friendly and the front desk have a good command of English language, amongst others. All members of staff were very friendly, and patient and helped us a great deal since we do not speak Portuguese or Spanish and needed help with little things like buying medication at the local chemist when I got sick. Our room was tidied every day without us having to remind or request this and we had new towels daily. A/C was effective and we also had use of a fan in the room, again having stayed in several hotels across Brazil, we found this to be the best hotel we stayed in with the best staff, food, service and facilities.
You can’t go wrong, unless you’re looking for Glitz, Shine and Glamour, this is not your glassy modern hotel, it’s very rustic and very ethnic with African Brazilian influences. Lovely.

Room Tip: No lift or elevator so if you can get Room 01 you're lucky - it's close to breakfast room to...

We stayed in Bahiacafe for three nights during Carnival 2013. We got a pick up from the airport, which I really recommend - the hotel would probably be hard to locate by yourself.

The staff was nice, rooms were clean and simple with no extra fuss. Breakfast was also surprisingly good.

The location was also good, since there is a square right in front and no need to walk through shadier places to get here. We didn't suffer from any noise, like past reviews said.

All in all, Bahiacafe was quite a good choice for carnival, since we could get a good sleep away from the biggest shows.

The hotel is good, ok service and fine location, in the center of the Pelourinho and by the main elevator to the city. But some rooms can be really nasty and smelly. Our first night we had a room that was humid and dark (the window opened on a little courtyard) and the whole room smelled like pipi. We changed after one night and our second room was just great, so you just need to ask to see the room before you agree on it, or change as soon as you can if there's a problem. The management is quite nice. However, for the same prices, you can find MUCH BETTER in the same area...

I recommend this property enthusiastically. Its location is perfect, the staff is as helpful as they are patient and accommodating, and the breakfast is delicious. I had an interior double superior room (100USD), and I thought it was a bargain. Free access to the internet is also a big plus. They have their own taxi service to and from the airport, which I recommend. Were I to return, thia place would without hesitation be my hotel of choice!

Very nice place, helpful and polite staff. Very nice rooms, tasty breakfast and excellent location - old town. We staid for 3 nights, totally opposite to experience in Rio.
We ask several times for advices about restaurant selection to reception and all times we got good suggestion. Thanks for good service!

Friendly hotel in Salvador's Pelourinho area. Also one of the few places in this price category where the very helpful reception staff speak excellent English. The hotel has a nice atmosphere and both public areas and the rooms are decorated with attention to detail. Despite its location at lively Praca da Se, the rooms are quiet as they are situated in the interior part of the building.
In the morning you get to experience a sumptuous breakfast in the wonderful area facing the square.

Staying here is a no-brainer. It is relatively cheap, has beautifully decorated rooms, has the best breakfast we had in Brazil, and has a perfect location.

The hotel has the charm and comfort of a little boutique hotel, but is quite accessible and laidback. The breakfast includes some magnificant juices and home baked cakes and other good food. The location on one of the main squares in Salvador is second to none. Access to the other squares and main streets is 2-3 minutes. To the elevator 2-3 minutes as well. With a police car parked almost in front of the hotel day and night, security is hardly an issue for the hotel. And about the noise, as some reviewers complained, we did not notice it at all.

There is just one main caveat. We were very much saddened by the security problems of downtown Salvador and therefore the immediate location of the hotel. We did not feel that we could wander further into the city (during day and night) than the three main squares and the two streets leading to the Pelourinho square. Even driving by taxi to some destinations was not always a comfortable and risk-free experience. The main point is that we thought that Salvador is beautiful and worth visiting, but that we were done in a day and happy to leave. We are certainly not the paranoia-types and have also visited places like Rio and Cape Town, but this was not a comparison.
