I spent 2 excellent weeks staying at the SuperClub Breezes resort in Costa do Sauipe, Brasil. We had flights from Gatwick to Salvador and upgraded as we were flying out to get married so travelled in comfort.
We stayed at the resort from 16th-30th September 2006. There were 5 people in group with 3 of our close friends travelling separately to us. This was not only a holiday; it was also our wedding and our honeymoon. Before I forget – don’t take dollars with you – they prefer to deal in Brazilian Reals in most places. I will try and cover as much as I can in my review but I am positive there will be many things I miss so please feel free to email me any questions.
We arrived around midnight and a carnival was taking place so our coach couldn’t get close enough to the hotel. We stopped at a bar and had drinks and snacks whilst we waited for our transport. Our transport arrived in the form of GOLF BUGGIES!!! We went flying down the road on the back of the golf buggies towards our hotel, the sound of samba music and bullfrogs filling our ears – what an arrival, I doubt it will ever be matched, yet the staff from the hotel was so embarrassed that we had to travel that way. We had arrived and were pleased with our little golf buggy adventure!!!
Rooms – The rooms were nicely laid out with two double beds, lots of space and always spotless. The balcony had great views of the gardens (including the marmoset monkeys living in the trees! – which I’ll talk about a bit later) and also the palm trees and beach in the background. We were greeted with champagne laid out for us upon our arrival too, which was nice! There was a regularly stocked fridge with lager, water and soft drinks stocked up daily.
Food and Drink – There were five restaurants at the resort. The main buffet restaurant – this served up a feast of local and international cuisine, serving everything from jerk chicken to fajitas to roast beef. Then came the ala carte restaurants (which were restricted to two bookings per week) – 1) The Market Place International (serving a choice of Mediterranean treats mainly), 2) The Pastafari Italian (excellent pizzas and Italian dishes – although it was very very hot in there!) and 3) The Munasan Japanese restaurant (this was outstanding – a top notch eatery, we had the teppanyaki experience for our wedding night meal, sitting around the grill whilst our chef prepared everything freshly for us – a great experience and wonderful food! Finally, there was the tropical snack bar near the pool – offering fast food and salads to keep hunger at bay.
There was a lobby bar, a pool side bar, a “day bar” near the pool, a disco and also a piano bar. These also included self service beer and soft drinks during the day. The piano bar was a good place to spend the evenings chilling out and often ending up in a sing song! The disco was a giggle too and lots of “shape throwing” went on in there! Basically, you were never more than a quick stroll to a bar, which is handy with the soaring temperatures Brasil gives you!
Entertainment – The entertainment within the hotel was not excellent. There is a fantastic trapeze and they give lessons and demonstrations (including a spectacular circus show). In addition to that there are some shows and music along with some capoeira (traditional Brazilian martial arts) demonstrations, but the entertainment is not brilliant if you are looking for a good cabaret. We had an excellent time in the piano bar and the disco so there is that option which we made full use of.
Facilities and the complex in general – The hotel, grounds, pool areas and facilities were very nice, clean and maintained. In fact the gardens were beautiful and some of the most colourful I have ever seen. The marmoset monkeys living in the trees are well worth a daily visit – they love fruit and the little coloured breakfast cereal loops and will eat from your hand. They are also very keen on wedding cake as we were to find out on our big day. SuperClub Breezes have a “no tipping” policy but you are permitted to give gifts as long as they are obvious gifts with a note from yourself. I admit to tipping some of the bar staff with the “handshake” and you are looked after that little bit more I must say! There is a large pool area which is also only a two minute walk to the beach. The beach is nice but no chance of snorkelling due to the waves. However this was good fun to go out and basically jump around (ideal for those who maybe like a boogie board). Overall, I have no complaints about the resort at all! Just down the road from the hotel there was a purpose built selection of shops, a bank, restaurants, cafes and bars which were a nice change from the all inclusive lifestyle and reasonably priced. There was a bus laid on to take you to the nearby animal farm and water sports but the best way to travel to these was to hire out a golf buggy and drive down there yourself (On the MAIN ROADS) – That was excellent fun (and cheap) – especially in the pouring rain!!!
The Wedding – Our wedding day was beautiful although with hindsight maybe a suit in the 40 degree heat was not my best decision. An area in the garden was transformed into a lovely little gazebo in paradise with a red carpet, flowing curtains and some amazing flowers. Our wedding coordinator at the hotel, along with our superb rep (JB) took care of everything for us. Emma spent the morning getting her hair and nails done on site and then it was time to go. The ceremony lasted about 20-30 minutes and was translated for us, it was a beautiful religious service and we were blessed. After the service (and a few tears of happiness) we had our photos taken in the gardens and on the beach before heading off for a “wedding day dip” before spending the rest of the day taking it all in and then heading to the Munasan for the most delicious Japanese meal I will ever eat.
Excursions – As we were there to get married and basically kick back and relax we didn’t go on any “official” trips. Things such as whale watching (which in fact we did book but due to rain was cancelled – it rained for the last two days of our trip but September is “rainy season” and it didn’t dampen our spirits one bit!) were available and also for those with a spare few hundred pounds there was trips for 3 days in Rio – which is one place I hope to visit at some stage in my life, but not just yet!
This resort will always be close to my heart, largely because we got married there and made some lovely new friends. I am going to try and list my five favourite things about the SuperClub Breezes resort in Costa do Sauipe, it is difficult to pinpoint five, but let’s have a go:
1) The surroundings – beautiful gardens, good scenery and a nice beach
2) The people – from hotel staff to other guests, but especially our rep JB – What a LEGEND!!!!!!
3) The pool & pool bar – relaxing in the water in the sunshine was ace!
4) Atmosphere – the music and general feel of the place is unique to Brasil
5) Our wedding – beautiful – memories that will be with us forever – thanks to all involved!
