“Take my word for it: go to the Amazon with this company”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2011

There are a number of options to choose from when you pick a tour company to take you into the Amazon, and they usually all offer similar packages. There are differences in location, price, amount of activity, level of luxury, etc. We choose Amazon Riders for a number of reasons: location visited (Juma is the best), the price was great, the experience was authentic, the people were wonderful, our guide was FABULOUS!

Our entire experience, from getting picked up and dropped off at the airport, to spear fishing at night in the Amazon, was unforgettable and so much fun! If you decide to trek into the wild, do it with Amazon Riders. They are a wonderful tour company :)

“get your expectations right”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

We booked Amazon Riders 3-day Araca tour on the internet after choosing from different options. I was really looking forward to the jungle experience: camping and sleeping in the jungle in hammocks. Since it was raining hard most of the time, our guide decided not to do the camping experience. We really would have preferred to be part of the decison-making process. We visited the Amazon in February, which is the rainy season, so it would be good to mention this also on the website, to get the expectations right. So we had a lot (!) of spare time and stayed in our bungalows a lot (the program also promised "caipirinha time" but there was no lime in the lodge, hence no caipirinhas) Before the trip we also asked if we needed rubber boots - Rafael and our guide Marcos said "no-no" but on the third day when we had a 3-hour hike in the jungle, it was so wet and we had to be with wet feet the whole day (the guide was wearing rubber boots though). Our guide Marcos was very knowldgeable: thanks to him we saw caimans (he even caught on so we could have a closer look), a sloth, monkeys, iguanas, birds.
We also liked the food: local fruits and fish - quite exotic for us.
On the third day when we were about to leave, a guy from our group said that the manager of the lodge had told him that as far as the trip back is concerned: "you are on your own". He had given our friend some money and the only thing they did for us was taking us with the canoe to the fisihing village. From there we had to arrange a car for us (thaks to Francisco who spoke Spanish and could communicate with the locals), then took the ferry, then the taxi. When we got to the office, we got hold of Rafael who had sold us the trip. He said that he did not understand how it could happen. He did compensate to us the extra expenses on the taxi. The trip back in fact was an adventure and looking back i think it was fun (although there was a tense moment when we were not sure if we would get to the mainland in the evening - we had a plane ticket for the next morning)

“A Make-A-Memory Rainforest Adventure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2011

My group of 8 completed a 9-day Amazon jungle adventure with Amazon Riders. The trip was booked as a survival trip and we definitely learned some basic survival strategies while immersing ourselves in virgin Amazon rainforest with a guide who actually scouted sites for the reality show Amazon Survivor. It was a fantastic tour with a knowledgable guide who had things planned but provided flexible options to customize our trip. I would suggest to try and invest the appropriate amount of days (>5) to truly break out of the influences of the Manaus residential area to go where you won't see other humans or hear soccer games while boating through the jungle. Our trip included 6 Peace Corps volunteers and was reasonable even for our tight budgets. We saw spectacular wild life and really appreciated the expertise of our guide Conrado Farias.

My one suggestion is that you really ask in detail what kind of packing list you should have for your specific trip. Had I known a little more about transportation and "lodging" situations, I could have equipped myself better. There is not a set list because it's trip specific, but definitely ask the outfitter.

“Great trip, and exactly what we wanted”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2011

We had a very athletic and adventuresome group, so we had strict guidelines regarding no touristy activities, reasonable cost, and no boring pamper activities.

Amazon Riders as an agency, and specifically Conrad, Tio Jao, and Branco as our guides, did an incredible job granting us exactly the experience we were looking for.

They even have some beds at there office where you can crash if you have an extra night before your flight. Great experience all around!
