We stayed 1 night at the Tropical en route to a lodge on the Amazon and thankfully, was a pit-stop. On reading the existing reviews of this hotel, describing the zoo as a 'treat' and 'interesting', I felt, for the first time, compelled to write. This was our 'once in a lifetime' trip to Brazil with the aim of enjoying the wildlife and the hope of spotting a jaguar or puma on the Pantanal.
So how devastating to see a jaguar caged in the zoo of the hotel Tropical, pacing repeatedly backwards and forwards in a stressed state. There were other animals, including ocelot, capivarahs, and birds caged in the zoo. How ironical and depressing to witness these wonderful creatures without their freedom and so close to their natural environment. I wrote to the hotel asking why the jaguar was so distressed and why the hotel had a zoo at all? There was no indication of any breeding programs being carried out and I have received no reply.
Any zoo that contains animals that are so obviously unhappy and extremely stressed is never a 'treat'. I couldn't wait to leave the hotel and I regret ever paying any money to stay there. If you love animals, please avoid this hotel - it was heartbreaking.
Apart from the zoo, our room was clean, but depressing with huge, dark furniture and the breakfast REALLY does finish at 10am. No time for a leisurely coffee when you are told to finish at your table at 10:05am! After travelling to 6 different locations in Brazil, we can confirm that the breakfast food items were the worst of the holiday. Very poor quality.
