Museu Théo Brandão, Avenida da Paz 1490 on the beachfront in Centro, features folklore artifacts and information. The museum is under the Universidade Federal de Alagoas (Federal University of Alagoas) and is above average for the emerging museums of Brazil's Northeast region. The exhibits range from costumes connected with folklore dances and festivals to crafts. The building itself is worth a visit and is an old Maceió landmark.
The artifacts have some explanations in Portuguese. Unfortunately, without some previous knowledge of the regional folklore, festivals and crafts many will not be in a clear context for visitors and will have to stand on their own merit. The staff, apparently sometimes involving students from the university, is helpful with limited ability in languages other than Portuguese.
The building is of considerable interest. It is being restored and there is an exhibit on that in the basement along with temporary exhibitions. The most striking feature is the flooring made of light and dark planking in designs differing from room to room. From the basement one can see some of the massive beams and the underside of the flooring above.
Public performances of music and dances are sometimes held at the museum and there is a cafe.
