“An Ocean View”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2010

We came to Albania from New York for vacation. Our friend told us about the Andon Lapa Hotel in Saranda. There were very clean rooms with air conditioning, friendly employes, delicious food, and wifi at the hotel. The convenience of the pool, beach, and cafe made our stay much more enjoyable. The ocean views were gorgeous. I would recommend this hotel to a friend.

The hotel is located just outside of town in an area under heavy construction. There is debris everywhere including on the sidewalks which makes walking anywhere from the hotel hazardous and at night, dangerous. It will take you about 25 min to walk to any decent shops and restaurants. There is a single restaurant on the property offering complimentary breakfast items like cereal and toast. The food and service is terrible and they are typically out of most of the items on the menu. You are better off asking what they have as opposed to what you see on the menu.

They only take cash and you must pre-pay. This is typical of most Albanian hotels.

The hotel has a tiny rock and gravel man-made beach. They basically filled in the first 10 feet with gravel, then it gets significancy deeper. There is trash everywhere just under the surface. Tires, construction debris and sharp metal objects are just some of the items I saw with the underwater mask. I would not recommend the beach to anyone with small children. If you must go in the ocean here, bring heavy underwater shoes to avoid cuts and bruises.

The pool is ok but it was too crowded and closes at 8pm, far too early.

Internet is available free of charge within about 15 feet of the lobby only. They are using a $19 wifi access point that can accommodate 2 or 3 users at one time.

The rooms are small and poorly maintained. I ran my fringers through the floor on my first day and came up with a clump of hair that wasn't mine. The bathroom was equally nasty. Be prepared to loose hot water frequently during your stay. My wife (who is Albanian) complained to the manager, Valter who just yelled back at at her because we booked 3 nights and where only staying 2. He would not even address the hot water issue or any compensation for the cold showers. Most of the guests we spoke with were equally displeased.

Overall, I would avoid this hotel based on location, cleanliness and the overall hazard it creates swimming in that filthy beach. Also, the attitude of the staff and management was unacceptable. Stay closer to downtown Sarande where the beaches are properly maintained and you are closer to better shops and restaurants.

We stayed at the hotel for one week during our holidays. We found the hotel to be extremely good value. The hotel is located a 10 minutes walk from the centre of Saranda. The hotel is new, clean and nice. The rooms are nice but small. All rooms have air-condition, sea view and balcony. Friendly staff, but only some of them spoke English.

  • Liked — Rooms and pool
  • Disliked — Some of the staff spoke little or no English
