I wish I could recommend this place. The people were nice, the room itself was fine. It was clean and quite pleasant and even though we went for the cheapest room available we had a great balcony looking out mostly on trees and even a bit of the gorge.
The grounds were well kept but the building itself left something to be desired. The stairways were dingy concrete and the one nearest our room was so dark you practically had to feel your way down the stairs. I couldn't get a drink out of the drink machine. The elevator was out of order.
But I could have forgiven those things for the sake of the nice room and balcony in pleasant surroundings.
What overshadowed it all was the amazing awfulness of the restaurant. The food wasn't just bad, it was actually rotten. My husband's salad had iceberg lettuce that was not just brown and wilted, it was starting to decompose. Yuck! I got a baked potato with large black rotten spots. The potato had been cut open in the kitchen so whoever prepared the plate had to have seen this - it was certainly the first thing I saw when the plate was laid in front of me. I had a harder time seeing the flat little piece of chicken that was hidden under the doughy, uncooked roll. Someone at the table next to us sent his food back because the meat was still frozen inside. My husband ordered ice cream for dessert, thinking that would be safe. It tasted fine but he did find a piece of old cabbage in it. We guessed that they used the same spoon for both. It amazed us that anyone could offer food like this to another human being, much less try to sell it to them in a restaurant.
So, although we did sleep well in our quiet room, I'm afraid the extreme awfulness of the restaurant gave us a very bad feeling about this place as a whole. It's hard to feel comfortable in a place that can allow this sort of nastiness to exist. It's too bad. With a decent restaurant this place could be an attraction, in spite of the strong impression of having seen better days. But as it is I really don't feel like I could recommend it to anyone. There are a number of other scenic spots in the New River Gorge area and I expect that some of them even have food you can eat.
