Lovely scenery greets you at the 276-acre Hawks Nest SP, just off US 60, near Ansted, WV. The lookout point is unfolding pretty scenes of the New River, which is especially colorful in October! You can take the tramway down to the marina from the lodge and back, providing a 360 degree view of the amazing fall colors around. The tramway descends 446 ft to the bottom of river. Cost of tram: round-trip fare is $4 this year. How much will be in 2014? Try to guess it, or just wait till next May and contact them for the current fare and operating hours.
The nature center is open from May through end of Oct.; it has hands-on, educational displays.
Various hiking trails lead to scenic views and overlooks. They vary in length and intensity. It’s a good idea to stop at the Visitors Center for map and info. Visitors can reserve a room at the lodge (if done in advance); even can dine there. The view from the lodge is superb and the ground is well kept. It offers secluded places, quiet rooms you will love. Bird feeders are placed outside to attract many birds. Bring your binocular to be able to follow your favorite birds with your eyes a good way. Birds are hanging around for a long time! For the adventurous people, jet boats depart from the dock, down the river.
The State Park is FREE, open 24/7. Check for your kind of activities, if they are off maybe a day or two. Hours may vary in different part of the year
