“spledid in the fall colors”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

Lovely scenery greets you at the 276-acre Hawks Nest SP, just off US 60, near Ansted, WV. The lookout point is unfolding pretty scenes of the New River, which is especially colorful in October! You can take the tramway down to the marina from the lodge and back, providing a 360 degree view of the amazing fall colors around. The tramway descends 446 ft to the bottom of river. Cost of tram: round-trip fare is $4 this year. How much will be in 2014? Try to guess it, or just wait till next May and contact them for the current fare and operating hours.
The nature center is open from May through end of Oct.; it has hands-on, educational displays.

Various hiking trails lead to scenic views and overlooks. They vary in length and intensity. It’s a good idea to stop at the Visitors Center for map and info. Visitors can reserve a room at the lodge (if done in advance); even can dine there. The view from the lodge is superb and the ground is well kept. It offers secluded places, quiet rooms you will love. Bird feeders are placed outside to attract many birds. Bring your binocular to be able to follow your favorite birds with your eyes a good way. Birds are hanging around for a long time! For the adventurous people, jet boats depart from the dock, down the river.

The State Park is FREE, open 24/7. Check for your kind of activities, if they are off maybe a day or two. Hours may vary in different part of the year

“There are Better Views of the New River Elsewhere”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We stopped by late in the afternoon disappointed to find the facilities, which are old and a little run down, closed early. While this was a little disappointing, we came here primarily for the view. Unfortunately, the view was also disappointing; limited and the wild New River is flat here as it is just above a dam which explains the ability to run the Jet Boats here. Frankly, we found no reason to come here as there are more expansive and MUCH better views where the wild New at Grandview (the best near Beckley) and Canyon Rim Visitor Center (the next best near Lansing), the latter also offering views of the New River Gorge Bridge.

“Not worth the visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Just an average state park. Although the scenery was beautiful, the dinner we had there was below average. Service was poor and the food was below average.

“Beautiful, quiet and affordable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

The hotel was older but in very good condition, clean and quiet. $93 for two queen sized beds and a view of the gorge and river. Set back on lovely grounds of playground and tennis courts and pool. Friendly staff. About 20 minutes from rafting starting point. Much better than renting a platform tent for $80! Free breakfast was not very healthy but coffee and a donut was fine.
