“Fun day at sea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

My daughter and I had a fun day. It was a bright sunny day, I guess somewhat unusual for this time of year. Our boat came across 2 pods of Orcas after about 1 hour and we followed them around the San Juan Island estuary for most of the rest of the day. The scenery was beautiful. The captain and crew knowledgeable and entertaining. I could see others were getting bored after a while but we were mesmerized by the Orca activity. Of course we would have loved to get closer but law restricts getting within, I believe, 200 yards. We also saw many harbor seals and various birds. The boat was comfortable, a little overcrowded. Food was for purchase available but we had brought our own sandwiches. I would recommend this for older kids and adults. Young ones seemed bored right away.

Thank you for the review! We are happy you enjoyed the day whale watching with your daughter. It sounds like you had a trip filled with whales and good weather! You are correct about the federal guidelines for whale watching. These guidelines are in place for any watercraft (boats, tankers, ferries, canoes, kayaks, etc.) and we will always obey these laws to ensure the safety of the wildlife. With the size and height of the Island Explorer 3 you get a fantastic view of the whales at any distance and it is one of the many advantages of whale watching with our company.

The Island Explorer 3 was actually built specifically to function as a whale watching boat and even at full coast guard certified capacity, there is still room for 100 additional passengers. This absolutely ensures enough seating and space at the railings for everyone to comfortably watch whales and take photos with room to spare. We encourage all of our guests to move around the boat throughout the trip to maximize the wildlife seen and enjoy the entire vessel and experience to the fullest extent. Thanks again for leaving a review!

“A Great Day on the Salish Sea in September”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

We were hesitant to take a trip after days of heavy rains, but the heavens opened up for us on our wonderful day on our 5 hours boat tour around the San Juan Islands of course in search of whales and other wildlife, but everyday is unique and wacky in it's own way. Our highlight was a sea lion posing on a navigational buoy, multiple Minke Whale sightings with some views of their rostrums, two different lighthouses and a Stellar Sea Lion tossing his salmon around like a rag doll through the fog. We appreciated Michael and other friendly crew on board for a fabulous day with lots of facts about the wildlife and fun on the Salish Sea.

Bring your monocle and lots of fleece layers including a hat or headband and wind/water proof jacket. We took layers on and off all day. We will definitely be back with Island Adventures. The thought of their season pass sounds really cool, because this was definitely a happy cruise with lots to see and different every day. We brought lunch and water on board and enjoyed chatting our fellow cruisers. We got off the boat just in time for Anthony's happy hour.

Thank you for the review! You give sound advice - layers are always a must, especially for whale watching and spending time outside in the fall. At any point it can be 15 degrees cooler on the water than it is on land and we often wear warm winter jackets on the tour. The more time you spend outside the more wildlife you're likely to see!

Thank you for also submitting photos - they are great! It gives other travelers a good picture to match with your tour description. We are happy you had a good time and that weather didn't scare you away! The Island Explorer 3 is a great and comfortable vessel for fall season whale watching.

“Good but long.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

We enjoyed the boat ride. It was overcast and a bit chilly for us but we bundled up. We had to ride all the way to Dungeness Bay to see the whales. They of course kept their promise for us to see whales. It was brief but in the end we saw a few flips of the whale tales. The staff were pleasant and very knowledgeable of the animals we saw along the way. The boat was comfortable.

Thank you for the review! We are glad you were able to enjoy the trip! We always allow 5-6 hours for whale watching to be able to guarantee whales and on your particular trip, it made it possible to locate whales in Dungeness Bay (just east of Port Angeles!) and also see the local scenery and wildlife. It is not often that we end up in the that area so this trip was unique and special for the season. Thank you for also recognizing our hard working staff and the comfort of the Island Explorer 3! It's a great vessel for whale watching in the chillier fall months.

“An unforgettable day watching orcas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

We had the most amazing day watching orcas with Island Adventures on Sep 26, 2013. The crew were so friendly and helpful and made our day both enjoyable and informative.

We were incredibly lucky with the beautiful weather and then after only about an hour we contacted a pod of orcas, 'right in our own backyard' and continued to follow them for about 4 unforgettable hours. All the time we were getting updates and information about the whales from the knowledgeable Mike.

Our fellow whale watchers were a mixture of newbies like us and seasoned watchers who had been on one of these expeditions many times. The seasoned watchers all said what a special day this was, so we felt so lucky.

A word of advice: do remember to laugh at the captains corny jokes, or the consequences could be dire!

Thank you for the review! It's always exciting to find whales just outside of Anacortes, especially orcas! We have been having some beautiful fall days in the San Juan Islands and the scenery is always spectacular no matter what. We will be taking trips all the way through the end of November, weather permitting. The Island Explorer 3 is very comfortable boat so we are able to whale watch in the rain or shine during the entire fall season.

Thanks again for the review and for laughing at Captain Michael's corny jokes!

“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Highly recommended. Got out on the water around 11 AM and found Orcas at about 2:00. It was a spectacular sight to see; Several Orcas breaching and popping their heads out of the water. The 3-person crew on the boat was equally impressive. Michael, who captained, was informative and very funny. Bart mingled with the crowd, and in between taking photos of the whales, talked about various issues relating to whales and the surrounding area/ ecosystem. Brooke was the third and most entertaining of the crew. She was very funny and equally informative. While we were breathlessly observing the surrounding Orcas, she educated the passengers about pretty much anything one would ever want to know about said Orcas and other wildlife. I give the trip 5-stars. I was as impressed by the crew as I was by the many Orcas we saw.

Thank you for the review and recommendation! We love to hear it when our passengers have a good time and connect with our crew. We all enjoy what we do and showing passengers whales is the favorite part of our whole day. We are so proud of how knowledgeable our crew is about whales and wildlife and educating guests about our area is a great part of the tour. No matter what you see, the crew will have interesting facts about it! We are confident that we provide a very well rounded tour and experience for everyone on board. Thanks again for the review!
