Just returned from an overnight stay in Ashland Virginia. First of all hotel could not find my reservation even though I had printed confirmation. After 10 minutes they finally located it and tried to charge me $10 more than the confirmation I had. Hotel is in a very run down area of Ashland. Now keep in mind Ashland is a very small town but this hotel is in the most run down delapidated area the town has. Carpets in this hotel are filthy. First floor smells like body odor, 2nd floor has a very smoky smell even though its a non smoking floor and the worst is the 3rd floor. That floor has the strongest "Indian food or curry" smell and its a nauseating smell when you smell it constantly. The continental breakfast was very skimpy - 2 cereal containers, 1 container of bagels and a few muffins. Don't count on getting too much there. The noise from 95 is deafening when you are trying to sleep as hotel sits right on the exit ramp. I have stayed at other hotels in the area and certainly will not be returning there. Spend the extra money and go across the street to the Sleep Inn.

“Owners need to be more helpful”

Howard Johnson Inn & Suites/Kings Dominion

Sep 7, 2008

We stayed here in the middle of July while on our vacation. I found this hotel in the coupon booklet Room Saver. It was a great price for 2 queen beds. But when I checked in he (the owner) would not give me the coupon price. He charged me extra for my 2 children under 12years of age. I have never paid for a child under 12. I didn't know any hotel done this.

Ok, we got the room any way. We were tired. We stayed here 3 nights. The beds were very comfortable. There is a window seat. My daughter really liked that once we put a blanket on the stain on it. Actually, it look like peanut butter. I finally told the housekeeping when we left how to clean it. It look like it would not take much, it was just a crusty stain, not a deep down. A little effort would clean it. if they tried.

It looked like a man and woman cleaned all the rooms. Our room had only wash clothes and towels for 3. I went down and asked for more. Since I had to pay extra to have children, I thought they would at least give me the proper amount, but I had to ask all 3 days.

He gave us a room on the side facing the interstate. It was very noisy. Luckly the air conditioner drowned some of it out and we were very tired every night.

This had to be the worst breakfast I have ever had at a hotel. Very little. Did not restock either. I just had coffee and juice, went to Mc Donalds.

We are season passholders. We are and have went back to Kings Dominion since our stay. Sorry they will miss out on a repeat customer.

I did my usual routine in reverse for some reason - we booked the hotel THEN checked TripAdvisor. By, were we worried. Our family: two 40ish parents, 15 year old and 6 year old boys, and a 10 month girl. So, the hotel needs to be at least relatively clean and quiet. I found an amazingly low rate for two nights here and booked it. Keeping in mind that HOJO is basically a two-star motel, and all the other choices were bottom feeders (Motel 6, Super8, etc) here's what we found.

Positives: The hotel was clean, the room smelled good, they offer two QUEEN size beds (not doubles like everywhere else), and even though it's located on I-95, we were on the back side facing the empty lot across the street, and we never heard a single truck or bit of road noise. The air conditioned worked like an arctic blast, and the roomy beds were clean and comfortable. The location of the hotel is away from most of the traffic. It's on the frontage road, but it's as far away from the main drag as you can get, so you don't have trucks turning around in your parking lot all night, like you would get in some of the other hotels. And the rooms have indoor hallways, not like the other "doors open to the parking lot" motels.

Negatives: Yes, the elevator is not air-conditioned. But it's fast, so it's not a major issue. Most 1 to 2 star hotels make you ask for shampoo and things, so bring your own, or just ask. The pillows weren't great, but we always bring our own, so it wasn't an issue for us.

Your mileage may vary: The "smell" that some people complained of was curry. The owners are Indian, and the smell of curry was in the air at check-in, but was not present at all in the rooms. Rooms facing the highway may be noisy - I have no idea. Ours were whisper quiet - the baby slept like a...well, you know. We overslept breakfast both days, so can't help you there.

This property is not a dump. It's a good little 2-star hotel in a city full of 1-2 star hotels. If you need the Marriott, stay in Richmond.

The hotel is one exit from King's Dominion, which is where we were heading...about 8 minutes door to door.

We usually stay in Glenn Allen, VA on our trip to Kings Dominion, but decided to save a little money and stay at a different, less expensive hotel . Well, you get what you pay for. The hotel had a small, unimpressive front dest with a less -than -friendly front desk clerk who could not greet me with a "hello" or "how can I help you" and then when I asked if we could check in (after 12 noon), told me that check in was at 3pm and didn't even budge to see if there was a room available, like any other decent hotel clerk would do. Then my husband went in to use the restroom in the lobby, which was out of order. The hotel smelled weird and the free breakfast wasn't even worth eating, which we didn't. The room was very small, but clean--don't excect any amenities because there was only a small bar of soap in the room. I suppose if you just want a place to sleep, this hotel is ok, but the area is kind of seedy--a big truck stop.
