In my experience, the Aloft hotel brand is the starwood / Westin hotel chain's attempt to woo the tech savvy business traveller with a reasonably trendy property that provides essential stay needs at an essential stay price. Unfortunately, the Aloft location near Dulles Airport seems to capture the challenges of the chain without many of the upsides.
My stay was characterized by an overly brightened room, with a center mural of flowers between two beds attempting to disguise otherwise rock hard mattresses, and an industrial arrangement of bed and well... not really bath but shower.
The room offers the central elements you expect, bed, basic climate control, a place for your sink and counter, and even a small fridge. They offer a reasonable size given the price, decent water pressure, and plenty of space for work on horizontal surfaces.
If all you are after is a hard bed and a couple of elements to allow you to face the next day clean, the property will suit, and at a good price for the area, with proximity to a few restaurants, a gas station, and a pretty good shopping center.
Its when my expectations are for a more comprehensive experience that my stay fell short. Climate control is provided by an air unit that is on/off. No bathtub is in the room. The configuration of the room means no door on the bathroom, and indeed the door on the toilet ill fits.
There is no real kitchen in the hotel so the bar food items are all either eaten cold or easily heated in a microwave. The health facilities and pool are spartan and small, ill suited to more than a soak and splash. Laps were not possible for me.
This could be a solid two star property if that is what your needs are. My expectations of the Aloft brand are somewhat higher based on my experience and my family needs, and I was sorely disappointed.
Ask for a room mid-way in the hall. Rooms at the end can be a long walk from the elevator.
