I am a Starwood Platinum member and chose Sheraton Crystal City for its location, and the fact that it had an executive lounge. Unfortunately I discovered on arrival that the hotel has no suites at all (apart from one attached to its conference facilities), and that the Executive lounge is pretty much unused during the weekends - a phenomena quite specific to Sheraton hotels in the USA, and not the rest of the world.
As I was SPG Platinum my wifi was free - although in Feb 2011 they appeared to be running a promotion where all guests received free wifi.
The hotel is one of the smaller hotels in the Crystal City area - right next door to the Radisson Blu, Hampton Inn, and very large Marriott Crystal City and Crystal Gateway. It appears to primarily cater to small conferences more than recreational travellers. It is also directly across the road from the Crystal City Metro underground station, and the two rambling underground Crystal City shopping complexes. There are plenty of good restaurants close by, and within walking distance, particularly a couple of streets over on the 12th street side of the Crystal City shops.
The public areas of the hotel are rather small, and a lot smaller than what they appear on the website photos. The breakfast buffet is pretty basic, with their a-la-carte menu not being much more extensive. Rooms are comfortable, although a little dated and dark. No particular problems though. The location just across the road from the Crystal City Metro station is excellent. Downtown DC, the Mall, monuments and Smithsonian are literally only two or three stops away and very very accessible, at much lower hotel room prices than the downtown hotels. They also offer a free shuttle to Reagan National Airport which is only 5 minutes away.
I was satisfied with my stay, and stayed here because I was an SPG member and this was the best priced of the Sheraton hotels in DC that was still conveniently located, although if I had not been an SPG member I probably would have opted for the next door Hampton Inn (which I have also stayed at previously and found good quality), or at either of the Marriott hotels, which were much larger and offered many more amenities and public spaces.
