“Well-appointed and a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

I needed to spend five days in December in downtown DC, but my usual preferred hotels were fully booked. I took a chance and decided to stay out in Arlington, hoping mass transit would make things easy.

It did. RIDICULOUSLY easy.

Walking out of the front of this hotel, you can practically fall down into the DC Metro system. And if you're hungry or need to shop, everything you could possibly need is within a 2-3 block radius thanks to the Pentagon City shopping area. Everything from boutique shops to the typically alarming giant carts from Costco careening across the street were within easy reach.

(And a short walk to Dunkin Donuts too. That's important, to me at least, because there ain't no coffee like DD coffee.)

During holiday season, the Ritz puts out hot apple cider every night, which is delicious. The beds were so comfortable they made me run late for work twice. There's little negative to say about this hotel, unless you're a 5-star snob who recoils at the idea of a busy doorman not being available to assist your precious backside through the entrance without you touching a door handle. It was a busy place and the staff managed it well, in my opinion, but no, it wasn't perfect every moment.

For the Metro convenience alone, I'd recommend it and I will try to stay there again next time instead of being closer into the District. And I'm taking a day of vacation just to stay in that bed longer.

Everything about this property is lovely. The location is terrific, very convenient to go into DC or the Pentagon. The Ritz has an entrance into Pentagon City shopping mall (lots of stores and restaurants, and a a Metro (subway) stop). The hotel staff are unfailingly polite and helpful. It can be a bit pricey but it's worth upgrading to the club floor. Complimentary bites throughout the day, ending with desserts in the evening, complimentary alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks, WiFi, DVDs, Ipads, etc. The rooms are a bit dark without much natural light but they do have lots of lamps to compensate. The beds are very comfortable and, at least on the club floor, there are illy coffee makers in the room - absolutely delicious.

Room Tip: Ask for a city view

Spent a combined work/vacation 4 nights at this property. Room was large and clean, staff was personable and attentive. The hotel is right above a metro stop (I think 1 or 2 stops from DCA airport), and attached to a decent mall which is very convenient. The gym was well equipped and I was impressed with the chilled bottles of water available there.

Just returned from my approximately 40th stay in this hotel over a 15 year period and I regret to say that I'd no longer recommend it as a special experience in the DC area. You want to feel a little pampered at a Ritz, and the "little glitches" started when I walked up to the front door-- and opened it myself (what??!). Check-in was fine, but I was asked about newspaper preferences; I declined newspapers; and then I received and discarded a USA Today every morning. (Well, I suppose in a way they technically did not give me a newspaper-- hee hee!) My shower drained so slowly that I ended up in ankle deep water; when making up my room the housekeeping staff removed all the pillows and bolsters from my bed AND FROM THE ROOM except for 2 skinny foam numbers (what?!); and I got an annoying, mumbly, scripted phone call interrupting my evening asking me if everything was all right. I hate this practice which is sweeping the lesser chains; I would like to be left alone and trusted to report dissatisfaction. Service in the lounge was ridicuously slow despite the presence of many wait-staff. Finally, the "holiday feel" and lush decorations that I always enjoyed so much as this hotel have all but disappeared. A few soulless trees with white lights, a few bowls of ornaments, and a strangely gray cake shaped like the Pentagon stood in place of the walk-through gingerbread house and other past delights. Maybe it's the economy, maybe it's the management, but this once over-the-top treat of a hotel has landed squarely in the middle.

Disappointing to rate a R-C a 3, but......

First off, it is pretty, but I found it to be very dark inside. No windows will do that, I suppose. The lovely gingerbread house in the lobby would be gorgeous if highlighted somewhere with windows, but once you get inside the first floor, there are none.

I called twice this past week early in the morning (7am) to be connected to the room (my significant-other arrived before I did), and the gentleman who answered the phone both times, Joseph (I believe) was not very friendly.

I was looking forward to Fyve, having read reviews in a few places. However, as a previous reviewer pointed out, they get too busy, not enough service, and we found ourselves sitting there, waiting, waiting, waiting..... also, the little dish of snacks that came with all of the drinks all had peanuts in them. With so many people these days with peanut allergies (myself included), this was a disapointment. Sigh.

The room was nice, 10th floor, with a most uninspired view of the mechanical systems of the hotel (this is for a Marriott Platinum guest). Left one night early and went around the corner to the Residence Inn where is was pretty amazing, quiet, and would consider again.

Unless, you can get a terrific deal on a room at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City, go elsewhere. First, the good things. It has a decent location adjacent to a large shopping mall and the DC Metro. It is also only 2 stops from Reagan National Airport. Nonetheless, there are other hotel properties that offer the same benefits. The hotel and rooms are passably decorated in a rich upscale decor, but it is looking a bit tired. The elevators are slow and require your room key card to go anywhere, which can be a pain when your hand are full.

Now for the downside. The wireless WIFI is glacial and they charge $12 for this frustration. The phone in my room did not work, The drain in the bathtub shower did not work. When you ask staff to fix problems they respond promptly, but are often poorly trained and often do not know how to repair faulty equipment. In brief they are like your puppy - eager to help, but not very skilled in what you may need!

For what you will experience, you will likely pay too much and could get better value elsewhere

I have stayed here several times and there are many pluses.
There is a metro stop right out front..in fact, you can enter without going outside. The hotel is attached to the Fashion Mall, which is a nice distraction. if you get a 'city' view it is pretty nice, if blocked by a few buildings.
The hotel staff is very nice, very helpful and the rooms are quite attractive.
The club level, the club lounge, is very, very nice and the staff there is excellent..although for reasons that did not make sense to me the club lounge was 'closed' during a recent holiday stay. That was a MAJOR disappointment to me. Sure, I would like to be off on holidays but that is not an option for a hotel, is it?

My only dissatisfaction with this hotel is the restaurant Fyve.
Bland looking and lacking service. There always seemed to be a lot of guys in suits who work there wandering around and too few servers to actually handle serving. Food are slow to be delivered, morning and night and while pretty good, not worth the price and often served while not hot! I do not blame the servers but management..this is a restaurant in need of better management.

Room Tip: go club level..city view
