“Great Food, Average Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

We have been to Jose Andres' tapas bar a number of times and the many dishes we tried tonight did not disappoint. We started with cheese and Jamon samplers before moving on to treats such as; grilled hangar steak, grilled artichokes, calamari, yummy chicken fritters and more. Food comes out quick so you an order plate by plate and repeat what you like the most- we doubled up on hangar steak, chicken and calamari. The tapas are upscale with prices to match, our dinner averaging out to about $50 per person with only 2 alcohol drinks and no dessert. Unfortunately here, the service did not live up to what you expect from a celeb chef or when you are paying more than a couple of c-notes. Our wait person was perfunctory and appeared to have a slight attitude. They had trouble understanding that I wanted still and sparkling water for the table and brought our daughter a Sprite even though she clearly said Coke. Neither of our soft drinkers were ever asked if they wanted another nor was my wife's iced tea refilled. I was offered only one more Sangria, when I easily would have gone 1 or 2 more if asked. Finally one of our fav reorders was forgotten and something we didn't order brought to the table, we refused this but were charged anyway- when I asked the charge be removed, the servers disdain wasn't even hidden. By the time we were ready for dessert, we wanted to get it elsewhere- hard to pin it down but the service just wasn't "on" . Don't skip Jaleo because of this review, the food overides that disappointment.

“Great sangria, good tapas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

Had no idea what to expect here, but was pleasantly surprised. The red sangria was fantastic! The food options were plentiful and varied. The apple and fennel salad was very light and delicious. The fried pasta with shrimp and calamari was different and intense. Service was a little slow, but the ambiance was nice.

“Great tapas a stone's throw from the airport”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

We popped by the Crystal City branch of Jaleo this afternoon. Decided to go the airport early and then try out Jaleo. Good decision.

The place was pretty quiet, which can go either way (disinterested service or extra attention). I'm glad to report that the afternoon shift doesn't let Jose down. Here's my rundown:

Wines. 5/5. Jaleo is on the pricey side for food. The wine list can get there, but you don't have to break the bank. We split a good bottle of rosé (Tempranillo), attractively priced at $40.

Pan - 5/5. Bread topped with tomato and jamon Serrano. Amazing how such a simple dish can be so good.

Papas bravas - 5/5. Again, a simple dish, brilliantly executed.

Mussels - 4/5. The mussels were perfect (wish I could get ones of such quality), but the dish was a bit bland.

Omelet - 4/5. Good, not great.

Service - 4/5. Everything we would want at the bar. Pacing was slightly off (three dishes arrived at once with a delay on the last. The bartender handled us well.

While there, we learned about the Subdat paella special. We'll be back for it!!!

“Authentic Spanish tapas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

Great selection of tapas and Spanish wine, almost as good as being in Spain. The small plates are perfect for sharing between two or three people and allow you to sample a wide variety of delicious foods.
