“Pleasantly Surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

I had to stay here on business because DC hotels were mostly booked. I was pleasantly surprised by my stay -- the staff and rooms were both good. The location is not bad, within walking distance of a mall, restaurants, and bars. The hotel is also convenient (enough) to the Ballston Metro stop.

The Westin Arlington Gateway is a terrific hotel outside of D.C. For those of you that won't have a car, it is about three blocks from the Ballston Metro Station and there are several bus routes nearby as well. I myself didn't have a car, so I can't speak about the parking situation but I do know the only option is valet. The hotel itself is newer and entirely non-smoking. There is an onsite restaurant that is fairly on-par for the area and there is a Starbucks attached to the building. There's some great restaurants nearby and a mall is about a block away. The bathrooms are fantastic and they have the Kohler rain showerheads, which are awesome. Overall, I gave it a perfect 5 rating because I had no issues during my entire experience, the rooms were comfortable and the area was extremely easy to navigate. I would absolutely stay here again in my next trip to D.C.

So...this place is famous for their beds and showers which were both awesome! However, their service was very lacking and I would not stay there again. The hotel maids did not refurnish simple things like coffee for the coffee maker, towels, or Kleenex...we had to call and ask for these items. The phone kept blinking and they just came and unplugged and said it would be fixed the next day...which is wasn't. The A/C went off and they did get this fixed during the middle of the night. They had this great area with flavored water, but the fruit kept getting caught in the spigot so you couldn't get the water out. It was infused at first, but later on they actually poured Hawaiian Punch or some other very sweet, red powder in it. The desk clerks were not friendly and when we asked about if we got high speed internet they told us they would call and let us know which they never did. By the way, you do not get free wifi here unless you are a preferred customer. Another thing was that we took a plastic glass of wine down to the Jacuzzi and one night no one said a thing, but the next night they said we could not take the wine to the Jacuzzi. When I complained about the above, the manager gave us free breakfast for a weekend day...he gave it to us on Sunday night so we tried to give it away and no one even wanted it...very cheap, not classy at all.

Room Tip: High floors...our view was a brick building across from us...other view would be traffic and city...

Yes, I know, everything costs a buck. That being said, could places such as Westin stop "nickle and diming?" First, there's the question of paying $26 to valet park for the night. Then there's the no free wifi in the room.

So...find street parking, especially on the weekend. That's what we did.

Don't get me wrong. The Westin was elegant and well done. The bed was so comfortable. Everything was what should be expected from Westin. The front desk staff couldn't have been more helpful, with suggestions about parking (even they, politely, agreed that it was crazy) to dinner ideas.

This is a good place to stay.

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your stay with us. Parking is certainly a challenge tdue to the hotels close proximity to Washington DC. and we do negotiate the most competitive pricing to ensure it is comparable to other area hotels. I was delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope to welcome you back again soon.

Be Well,

Joanna Sanchez

I've stayed here a few times over the years and always enjoyed it. Great rooms, nice towels and you have to love the shower heads. They still charge for parking but seem to have stopped charging internet which is a step in the right direction. Staff is very friendly, laundry is horribly expensive. Take the good with the bad. I will stay here again for sure.
Good location, good food within walking distance.

Room Tip: They seem to be all good with nice city views.

We recently had to find a hotel very last minute in Arlington. The Westin was able to accomodate us, get us 2 adjacent rooms on a high quite floor, and basically saved our trip. The hotel itself is in a bit of a no-mans land, so don't expect to do much in the immediate vicinity, but the hotel itself is nice and clean and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Took a group of high school students to Washington, D.C. The location was great and allowed us to access all major points within a reasonable time. Restaurants in the immediate area were reasonably priced.
