I was taken here by a friend who swears by Matuba and it definitely did not disappoint. The restaurant itself has approx. 40 seats with an additional 5 seats at the sushi bar. The service is welcoming and friendly. The menu is a decent blend of the staple a la carte sushi items and traditional Japanese dishes. We started the meal with Miso soup with tofu bits and scallions The miso was good albeit served at a slightly cooler temparture than tradition dictates. For entrees, we ordered the Spicy Tuna Donburi, Soft Shell Crab Tempura Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Salmon Skin Hand Roll, Unagi Nigiri, Spanish Saba Nigiri, Toro Nigiri, and Harami Nigiri. Presentation was decent, the rolls were tight and the nigiri was well-formed. It was quite pleasant to find that Matuba utilizes the traditional crushed Japanese/thai peppers and a hint of seasame oil and Siracha sauce to make their sushi spciy as opposed to utilizing the all-to-common "Spicy Mayo". They also make available bonito pepper flake seasoning for your rolls, which is a nice touch. The Softshell crab rolls contained lettuce in it which was different, but good. The Salmon skin handrolls were decent, but could tell that the handrolls were allowed to sit for a little bit before serving due to the nori being quite chewy. The nigiri pieces were perfect size and the fish was fresh. The Spanish saba and Hamachi had good texture. The Toro was decent, but notable not the best. Although the rice lacks character and the Sake menu isn't the greatest, Matuba is a very good place to dine for Japanese cuisine.
