My wife and I set out for a trip to Ray's Hellburger, only to find that it has closed for business. So, after walking for 30 minutes in very cold weather, we ended up at Retro Ray's. Apparently this is a more-casual version of Ray's the Steak and is immediately adjacent to the steakhouse.
We were a little early and were immediately seated without a reservation. Since we had planned to eat a burger at the hole-in-the-wall we had heard about, we were dressed very casual (jeans and dress shirt). In spite of that fact we were very comfortable at Retro Ray's. Most people were dressed in the same way.
The space is small, but comfortable and is decorated in a no-frills manner. We both had filet mignon and it was superb! A great piece of meat prepared to perfection. Bernaise sauce was the perfect compliment. The best steak we've had in DC, regardless of location. The mashed potatoes were very good. My wife was complimentary of the spinach, but I'm not a fan. Key lime pie was very different that usual, but very good.
A great experience for the price. I would highly recommend it. If you want a more formal setting, try Ray's the Steaks.
