“Great Service and Amazing Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

From the outside you might not expect this neighborhood gem to be anything but average or ok, but this little place will exceed your expectations! La Union is a fantastic place to get fresh Salvadorian food. Not only does the food taste GREAT but it doesn't hurt the wallet. Get a pupusa to start with. Then order either El Tipico or Carne Asada. I'm not a big meat eater myself but this is worth the bite. Although I have never had the Mexican food I wouldn't order it. You can have Mexican anywhere - go for the good stuff....Salvadorian food!

“Hidden Gem”

Must have: "fruit salad" juice. And all the dishes are just all around delicious. My favorite place to eat in the entire DC area.

“Honest, Authentic Mexican/Salvadoran food. Unpretentious Atmosphere.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2009

La Union is a hidden gem. We have eaten there countless times in the past several years and have never been disappointed. I even take colleagues from work because I know they'll love it and the fast service, and I've never been let down.

La Union serves good portions of wonderful Mexican/Salvadoran food. The fajita meal is served sizzling hot with all the sides you would expect. If you want more tortillas, it's never a problem. Enchiladas are my favorite there. Beef, chicken, and cheese are all excellent. The guacamole is clearly made freshly.

Chips are crisp and the salsa is just right. Each table has two bottles of habanero pepper sauce if you would like things more spicy.

There is a wide variety of imported beers, but I haven't tried them.

The outside is non-descript, but don't let that turn you off. The food here is a million times better than what you would get at places (nearby) like Rio Grande Cafe (RGC) or even Chipotle. RGC, in particular, seems to use salt as its main flavoring ingredient, perhaps to boost its liquor sales. At La Union, the taste comes through.

We've also used La Union for carryout, and they package the food well and even give chips and salsa.

As you can tell, La Union is in the top tier of my favorite local restaurants. If you're staying at Ballston (Arlington), Virginia, this is only a 3 minute drive away. If you're in Rosslyn (Arlington), VA, it's 10 minutes. Please make the trip.
