“Perfect for visiting DC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

We spent six nights at the HIghlander; because we were going to visit DC every day, we didn't need anything fancy, just clean and convenient. This motel fit the bill. Free parking, convenient location in Arlington 2-3 blocks from the Virginia Square metro station. ( It's about 15 minutes on the Metro to the Smithsonian.) The staff is very friendly and helpful, the free breakfast is enough to get you going (bagels, yogurt, fresh fruit, donuts, juice and coffee.) Our rooms were always clean and altho the motel is older, our bathroom had been remodeled with a large shower and new floors. I would have given it five stars except for the very low water pressure which makes for a long shower if you are trying to wash and rinse your hair.

The location is in a nice neighborhood with a few carry-out restaurants close by (burgers, chicken, pizza.) For a more complete or healthier meal, you can walk or drive a few blocks to several restaurants, cafes and bars in Clarendon. (We especially enjoyed the Silver Diner for it's large menu with lots of fresh offerings.) We walked around the neighborhood at night and felt very safe.

For reasonable rates, great location, friendly staff and free parking, I don't think you can't find a better option in the DC area!

Room Tip: Request a room in back for less noise from Wilson Blvd. There is no elevator, so if this is a probl...

Simple, no frills hotel super-conveniently located near the Virginia Sq metro stop. Great nightly rates, FREE parking (this alone is impossible to beat if you're driving from out of state and leaving your car to metro around) and nice staff. Excellent location, will always stay again!

I stayed at the Highlander a numerous times when, post 911, I had to do a lot of military reserve duty in Arlington. They were always good to me and it sure was nice to have a place to stay which was within walking distance of my duty station. I returned to the Highlander last week for the funeral of an old friend at Arlington National Cemetery, one of the many DC area landmarks easily reached from the Highlander. If your destination is beyond walking distance, and like me you prefer not to drive up there, the Highlander IS withing walking distance of two Metro stations. The Highlander's rooms are clean and spacious. I can't speak to the quietness of the streetside rooms, but my rooms on the back side have always been quiet. There are flat screen TVs and refridgerators in the rooms. They offer a basic continental breakfast. If you find that insufficient, there are a number of good restaurants, cafes, etc. close by. Weeknight rates are good by DC standards. Weekend rates are even better. Parking is free.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back are almost certainly quieter.

We had a very nice weekend stay at Highlander Motel. Staff was helpful and knowledgeable, location perfect for visiting Washington. Place may be outdated but it was clean and rooms comfortable. I will definitely recommend this motel to my friends.

The Highlander is an honest to goodness urban motel. It is very good value for money. We stayed there for eight nights and used the subway from nearby Virginia Square to go into Washington DC. The rooms are a good size and clean and comfortable. The breakfast is of good quality and the maid service is prompt and efficient. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. Little extras like free use of umbrellas ($20 refundable deposit) are handy. We can recommend this motel with confidence. The Silver Grill Diner and the Mad Rose Tavern are also very good value - just up Wilson Blvd to Clarendon Sq.
