“Excellent budget accommodation near to DC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

If you are looking at staying at the Americana you are almost definitely on a budget. DC is an expensive city to stay in, but we thought this hotel offered us just what we were looking for.

First of all they offer a shuttle to/from the Reagan Airport that saved us the cost of a taxi. Once installed, we found the location to be very convenient. We walked to the nearest Metro station (Crystal City) in 5 minutes and even when returning near midnight we felt very safe. The Metro journey to the points of interest is only 15-20 minutes and you can take the Yellow or Blue lines.

The rooms are smallish, but everything was very clean. The bathroom itself is a bit cramped, dated and the shower head is too low, but the water pressure was fine. There’s no coffee maker in the room, but hot drinks are available all day in reception. We were on the ground floor, but if you are higher they have a lift.

The breakfast was the usual cereals and breads with coffee and juice, enough to get you going, though the furniture in the eating area needs updating.
If you are driving, be aware that the hotel is on South Eads, not on Jefferson Davis (which is its postal address).

We paid only $66 for each of our 5 nights stay, which we thought represented excellent value given that we were so close to DC.

Thank you so much for staying with us and taking the time to write a review! We're glad you enjoyed our affordable rates, convenient location, clean rooms, and overall excellent value and will be sure to let the rest of our team know. We do apologize for any of the inconveniences our older property may have caused, including the somewhat small rooms, original bathrooms with lower shower heads, and the limited electrical capacity (which is why we cannot put coffee makers in the rooms). We really appreciate how you mentioned some of these issues along with a positive factor about them. Where possible, we do always try to offer something to help make up for any of our drawbacks, including the good water pressure, the 24 hour beverage service, and the clean rooms. In regards to the furniture in the lobby, we actually just replaced everything in there a couple years ago…guess we need to go back to the drawing board!

Thanks again, and we hope to see you the next time you're in the Washington area!

My boyfriend and I planned a three-day trip to D.C. for our anniversary VERY last minute. We searched all the usual sites, read what seemed like a million reviews to try and find a reasonably-priced place to stay just outside the city proper, and then he finally found the Americana. We arrived almost three hours early on a Monday and were allowed to check in immediately. The room was not the most modern I've ever stayed in, but it was extremely clean. We asked the desk clerk where we could grab a quick lunch, and she immediately told us that their shuttle driver would be happy to take us to a nearby pizza place and pick us up again when we were finished. The next day the shuttle dropped us off at the metro station and picked us up again in the evening. It was very close to the city, so it was easy to get to all of the places that required driving as opposed to taking the Metro. Just an overall great experience. Couple of notes: the pillows were incredibly soft and lovely, and the shower was extremely powerful. They also offer a simple but fresh continental breakfast every morning in their lobby area. The only problem we had was that we tried to order takeout to be delivered on our first night there and could not find anyone who would deliver to the hotel. Not a huge deal, but it was slightly annoying.

Wow! Thank you so much for your super nice review! We're honored you chose to spend your anniversary with us and are glad you enjoyed your stay, including our friendly staff, reasonable prices, clean rooms, and free shuttle. We'll be sure to pass along your kind words to the rest of our team. We're sorry to hear you had trouble finding delivery options. We usually have close to a dozen flyers in the lobby for places that deliver to us and our front desk clerks should be able to make good recommendations, so we'll have to check and see what's going on with our restaurant partners…thanks for letting us know!

We hope to see you again soon!

I chose Americana partly because of the retro exterior. The hotel was built in the 1960's and looks like it. The common areas retain the 60's appearance but the guest rooms are nicely updated. Our family of 4 functioned comfortably in the room which included a chair and ottoman and desk chair. The employees were very helpful as we were learning to navigate our way into DC. The price was reasonable and free parking in the DC area is a big deal. Free WIFI and a continental breakfast, as well.

I stayed here earlier this month when I had a friend in town and we went to a baseball game in D.C. I didn't want to drive all the way back out to western Fairfax County after the game (we had premium seats which included free alcohol :) ), so I looked for hotels to stay at. There's a dumpy hotel on South Capitol Street that wanted $330 for one night! I was able to get an upgraded room at Americana for less than $90.

This hotel has been around since the '60s and it looks kind of out of place surrounded by more modern hotels and condos, but it's a neat place. The staff were nice and the room was adequate and clean. Having a fridge and flat-screen TV was nice (there's a microwave available in the lobby). The bathroom was definitely a blast from the past, complete with pink tile, but the shower pressure was fantastic - my only gripe was that the showerhead was a bit low for taller people like myself. Breakfast included donuts, assorted pastries, and cereal.

The Crystal City Metro is a five-minute walk - you can access it by going through the Gateway Marriott. You can also easily walk to Pentagon City Mall for numerous shopping and dining destinations. Note that if you get back to the hotel late, all of the entrances except the front lobby are locked at night - you can't even use a room key to get in, so that was a little bit of an inconvenience.

If you prefer fancy hotels with all the fancy amenities, this might not be the best choice, but I definitely recommend it for budget-minded travelers. I really appreciate that the low rates include parking, breakfast and wi-fi - many of the other local hotels charge a lot for those amenities. There's no pool or fitness room, but if you just need a place to sleep, this is a great option.

I stayed at the Americana for 2 weeks in Feburary 2014 and had an overall great experience. I would say this hotel is the best for a budget minded traveler that doesn't plan to spend much time or money at the hotel, but needs a good home base. My one complaint is that on a Saturday night, there was a guest in the room next to mine that was LOUD. I didn't complain to the front desk, but I was able to turn the A/C unit on full blast and it drowned them out. One last thought that comes to mind is that the showers have amazing water pressure..something I really appreciated in the morning.

Here's a fair list of the pros/cons:

Pros:
Price
Clean
Short Distance from Airport and Metro
Free parking
Breakfast (doughnuts/bagels/cereal/juice/coffee)
Free WiFi
Water pressure in the shower
Helpful staff

Cons:
Dated looking
Low shower head, maybe good for someone 5'8 and under?
Can hear loud people in the adjacent rooms
No Gym
No Pool
No Restaurant

We stayed there for seven days while taking our first trip to Washington DC. We were one block from the Marriott Hotel entrance to the Crystal City Mall and Metro station. We walked there each day to take the train to the monuments, museums and memorials in the city. It was super convenient.

The hotel is very dated. The room was actually OK with a new big screen TV and a decent cable selection. The free breakfast was not very much to get excited about. There was coffee, juices, some fruit, donuts, and cereal. The price was was made the place worthwhile. Other hotels in the same area will likely cost twice as much as at the Americana. We paid $74 a night and that was great considering they also provided free parking for our rental car. We did need the rental car for going out for meals and for our side trips to Baltimore, Ft McHenry, and Annapolis. Parking at most hotels will be an additional charge if offered.

Overall, well worth the price.

Ideal location is a short walk to metro, best staff, shuttle to nearby restaurants or shops, clean rooms, free wi-fi, breakfast is Dunkin Donuts, bagels, cereal, whole fruit, coffee, juice. Stayed 5 nights and would return for sure.
