“I stay there almost every week - it is like my second home.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014

I live in Atlanta, work in DC - so basically the Americana is my second home.

Easy way to explain the Americana is a "diamond in the rough" especially for the budget minded traveler - for both business and pleasure.

Sure it looks dated outside - but once you get inside, meet the staff, see the remodeled rooms and remember the price you paid when you swiped your credit card - you will forget about the exterior.

If you are traveling on business and own your own business - this place will have a positive affect on your bottom line - and you will have to figure out how to offset all that new revenue with some other costs to keep the IRS at bay - (maybe a new company Ferrari?)

If you are traveling on business and work for a large consulting company - you know they are constantly scrutinizing your expense reports - this place will lower your weekly travel costs, make you look like a superhero and will get you that managing director / partner promotion you so deserve.

If you are traveling for pleasure - this place is in a perfect location, close to metro, close to restaurants. Bottom line is my wife and son stay here when doing the annual DC trip when I am working. And while my wife loves "five star" hotels - she has no problem staying here. (read: important data point)

My only warning - be careful of the donuts - they are addictive.

They also arrive around 3:30 am - so sometimes they start calling your name while you are asleep. #resistOrYouMayGetFat

If you are looking for a great deal near our county's capitol, you have come to the right place! Wicked easy access to the metro, free parking and plenty of it, Indoor corridors, elevators. If you are looking for the Ritz, move on! This is all we needed for our mini vacation in Washington, DC. A pretty clean room with a comfy bed! If you like saving money, this is your place!!!

Room Tip: The WiFi was awesome on the fourth floor by the 420's.

I stayed at the hotel starting in November for more than a week. At first, the vintage appearance of the hotel is its most prominent feature. However, after you have stayed in the hotel, you realize that you get an exceptional value for what you pay. The shuttle service is very accommodating, there is always a water cooler available for hot and cold water, there is a continental breakfast every morning (although sometimes their vendor doesn't give the freshest of bagels, doughnuts and the hotel should demand better of their supplier), the front desk is available 24 hours, and the staff really does try to meet every request (package receipt, luggage assistance, etc.).

The main improvements I would suggest are: (1) an upgrade in the snack machine (to include food options) although they do try to offer an assortment of chips at the front desk; (2) a mini business center with printers or an all-in-one printer machine (not even computers because everyone seems to have one) so those of us who need to scan, print, or fax documents could do so (in the amount we actually need) without encumbering the front desk and limiting the amount. These additions would be very helpful and could be a fee-based revenue generator also; (3) larger/newer refrigerators and microwaves for the rooms - although I understand why they probably don't have that now in terms of safety, cleanliness, and rodent control which, by the way have all been very good.

Just my two cents. The Americana is a very good option for short and longer term stays. You cannot beat this hotel for price, location, and free services included with the rate.

Room Tip: Something I didn't understand when I read the other reviews is that the less expensive rooms are...

Thank you for choosing us for your accommodation needs and taking the time to write such an informative review! We're glad to hear you appreciated our exceptional value, accommodating shuttle service, free amenities, and friendly staff. Thank you for also giving us some ideas on where we can improve; we have been looking into the business center and will consider your other suggestions as well! In regards to the room types, we actually have standard (less expensive) rooms both inside and outside, and as we continue our renovations, we will have renovated rooms outside as well as inside. If you, or another guest, prefers to be inside or outside, please be sure to send a note with your reservation or let our front desk agents know so that we can do our best to accommodate your preferences.

Thank you again for your kind words and patronage! We hope to see you again soon!

Entrance is on Eads St between Bank of America and Embassy Suites. Parking was free. The hotel looks like a throwback to the 1950's but don't let that scare you. We had a deluxe Queen room which I would say was a basic hotel room. It looked like it had been recently updated. If you are looking for luxury, you will not find it here. That being said, the bed was very comfortable (should have asked for an extra pillow), and the room was very clean. The bathroom was small but on par with what you would find in a typical home built in the 60's. Again, it was very clean which is what matters to me. The WiFi reception in our room was not great but it worked fine in the lobby.

We walked to the Crystal City metro (which is under the Marriot hotel) in just a few minutes. We also walked to Pentagon City shopping center, Costco and even to the Pentagon for our tour there. So, you can see that the hotel is very conveniently located.

Breakfast, which is included, consisted of 4 types of cold cereal, donuts, bagels and fresh fruit. I think there was some instant oatmeal as well. The coffee was good and there was some juice.

If you are looking for clean, basic accommodations at a great rate for the area, then I'd recommend the Americana Hotel.

The room was clean and had a nice desk and appropriate desk chair with a conveniently located outlet for plugging in the laptop and the smartphone to get work done. WiFi was great. The thermostat was easy to use. Everything worked except the bedside lamps. The retro charm was appealingly cute but not overwhelmingly cheesy.

If you're coming from the airport, you can take the Blue Line Metro to Crystal City, walk through the mall most of the way, and then exit and cross under the Jefferson Davis Highway. This should only be done if you're fairly adventurous as business travelers go and don't mind seeing the homeless people sleeping under the overpass. For the rest of us: call for the hotel shuttle.

LOVED that the lobby did not have a TV! I hate it at other hotels when I'm trying to toast my bagel and CNN is blaring away.

This hotel was a great value. There's a 10% off special when you check-in on FourSquare for the first time and show them. (Do this before they ring you up.)

The hotel is actually located on Eads street, right next to Embassy Suites. That is the entrance you will have to take. It is actually at the rear of the hotel. Many years ago the Jeff Davis Highway entrance was closed off because of the construction along Route 1.Nonetheless, the hotel maintained its Jefferson Highway address.
I have stayed at this for the past 7-8 years for 3-4 months each year while on business and I can't say enough good things about my stays here. If you're looking for a fancy hotel, you won't
find it here. But in my opinion this hotel in the Washington, DC area is unbeatable because of the following factors:
1. very short walk to the METRO
2. clean and very affordable room prices, a top priority for me.
3. very courteous and pleasant hotel staff, from the owner to the desk staff, housekeeping staff and limo drivers
4. complimentary continental breakfast (bagels, fruit, cereal, doughnuts, orange and apple juice, tea and coffee) Coffee available 24/7. Front desk staff on duty 24/7.
5. complimentary shuttles to and from Reagan airport and to nearby restaurants
6. free parking
In my opinion you can't match this value anywhere. After all, the hotel has been owned and operated by the family for over 50 years. Also, as a side note, part of the movie "State of Play" with Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe was filmed in the hotel a few years back. The movie company was looking for a retro hotel and they found it in the Americana, staff.. My compliments go out to the entire staff..Great job and keep up the good work.
