“Awe-Inspiring”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Do not miss this memorial. It is amazing in detail and splendor. It brings to memory not only the struggle on Iwo Jima but the spirit and sacrifice of our marines throughout this nations history.

“Best Memorial in DC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

We found this to be the most impressive monument in DC. We visited it twice. Once at sunrise and once after dark. It impressed us both times.

“Found by happy accident”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We missed our turn to head back to Virginia after visiting Arlington Cemetery and got on the wring road. All of a sudden on my left I saw the memorial! It took a few tries to loop back around & find the entrance (it really should be better marked), but am glad we did. IT IS HUGE. The sculpting is amazing, The detail! Made me proud of Marines every where. PLEASE try to find it, you won't be sorry. I think you could walk there from the cemetery, but we did not see signs anywhere.

“Impressive, inspiring memorial to all Marines represented by the flag raising at Iwo Jima”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

The USMC War Memorial commemorates the sacrifices of all Marines for America since 1775. The particular topic chosen to convey the spirit of the Marines is a sculpture patterned after the famous photograph (taken by Joe Rosenthal, Associated Press) of Marines and a Navy hospital corpsman raising the US flag atop Mt.Suribachi on Iwo Jima during WW II. Along the base of the monument are inscribed major battles fought by the USMC over the course of more than two centuries.

The huge sculpture is impressive and suitably inspiring. When we visited, a Marine ceremony was being conducted nearby.

The USMC War Memorial is a short walk from the Netherlands Carillon, which is well worth seeing as well.

The restroom facilities are portable toilets.
