I have been to Arlington since I was a little kid and still get a deep feeling of appreciation every time I visit. Being a veteran myself, this place is sacred and is a place that everyone from young to old should visit at least once. From the rows and rows of perfectly aligned headstones to the graves of the Unknown Soldier and the Kennedy Brothers, and to many other graves, you could literally spend hours here. I would highly recommend going to this place and seeing how nice it is and how it is a symbol of sacrifice. Bring your walking shoes because this is a trek up and down some hills. Be sure to go off to the other roads here and see some stones of many famous soldiers and statesman that may not be mentioned in the pamphlets!

Our visit was Thursday, November 29, 2007. Going through the visitors center, be sure to pick up a map. You might be tempted to buy a Tourmobile ticket to tour the cemetery. My advice is don't if you can walk a mile or 2 (more if you want to walk along every single drive) and the weather is not extreme. It is definitely not too large to walk and well worth it. You will see a lot more and won't be on the Tourmobile schedule. We walked to the 3 major highlights (JFK, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington House) and covered well over half of the cemetery along the way. There are some beautiful views of Washington DC and a lot of memorials and plaques that will only be seen if walking. It was extremely peaceful just hearing leaves rustling and squirrles running around. It is an awesome experience if going duing the off-peak season. It was a truly amazing visit.

I took a group of boys from my Boy Scout troop to Washington and consistantly when asked about the trip the first thing they mention is Arlington National Cemetery. The vastness and solemnity of the facility can be overwhelming. There was more than one occassion during our visit that I was moved to tears. It is difficult not to have your soul touched while there.

The absolute highlight of our visit to Arlington was the honor to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I could not help but notice that 32 teenaged boys were absolutely silent and still during the entire ceremony. Clearly the importance and significance of the moment was not lost on them.

I cannot stress how important it is for every American to visit this hollowed place. It will inspire, move, and stir you more than you can imagine!

As a visitor recommendation .... make sure to get a cemetery map and use the trams otherwise you could very easily get lost .... possibly forever!!!

A truly wonderful memorial - sombre yet beautiful, inspirational and humbling, the rows of marble headstones as well as the larger monuments are a really moving symbol and tribute. It's a tremendously peaceful place too - meticulously well-kept and with spectacular views down over DC. As you walk around the various sections, it really makes you think - and in this day and age, that's a very good thing. Yes, JFK is buried here and lots of other famous people but its the rows and rows and rows of simple white headstones that really bring home the message. As a Brit, I wish we had somewhere like Arlington. Unforgettable.

If you are in this area, this is definitely someplace that you have to visit. There are, of course, the obvious things to see, but there are beautiful sites, like the ampitheaters and such, as well as the view in some areas, that must be seen as well!
