“Cozy, Boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

My first stay at this cozy little boutique hotel, but will definitely not be my last. Only about 50 rooms which allows them to FOCUS on customer service. Really enjoyed the manager's wine social each night and sing along in the bar on Tuesday. The hotel staff was extremely attentive and this hotel is totally pet friendly at no extra charge. Conveniently located in Old Town Alexandria, walking distance to Metro as well as all the restaurants and shops. Price was very reasonable for the area. No pool or fitness center, but their sister hotel about 6 blocks away has both available to guests.

Kimpton at its best. The staff is amazing -- friendly, efficient, helpful. A great example being that on our last morning there were no longer any newspapers at breakfast. We were leaving within the hour, but I was asked what paper I would like and then told that they were going to the corner to buy the paper because they had not received enough that morning. Above and beyond! Pubic areas are lovely and it is very pleasant to sit and read in either the library or living room
The rooms were very well appointed and comfortable. (They also have a list of 25 items that you might have forgotten and that they will provide for free - many things that I never knew I needed!) The orientation of the building also means that the bedrooms are quiet. Bathroom had a single sink but was quite large for a city room. Food is excellent. Lovely wine and nibbles between 5:00pm and 6:00pm.
The location is perfect -- off of King Street half way between the Metro and the water. One block from the free King Street Trolley. Lots of great restaurants in the area along with interesting sites.
One note of importance! The mattresses are approx. 36" off the floor. If you are not really tall, getting into bed is a trick. HOWEVER... they have wonderful padded step stools! Get one (or two).

Room Tip: In walking down the hall, they all looked pretty good, but there must be size differences and the co...

Dear Pamelavail,

Thank you for your great review! Positive feedback means a lot to us especially when it comes from an experienced traveler like you. I’m sorry that we ran out of newspapers but I’m glad that our team went the extra mile to fulfill your request. All our rooms are slightly different and not all of them have such high beds. If you prefer to be a little closer to the ground we have the perfect room for you.

We went down to Alexandria to visit my son for the weekend and went on priceline the night before and was lucky to find this gem. The hotel is charming, the rooms were comfortable and the staff could not be nicer. The hotel is located right in the heart of old town Alexandria so you can walk to anywhere you need there. Parking is a bit expensive but we were forunate enough to find parking on the street ...fed the meter a few times and we were good to go

We were greeted at the door by a friendly gentleman, who quickly grabbed our bags and directed us to the front desk. He asked for my car keys and parked my car. Check in was a breeze we were shown to our room. Rooms are a bit small, but not cramped and beautifully decorated. Bathrooms were extremely clean also nicely decorated with all the necessities you expect in a 5-star hotel. The room temperature was perfect for the season and the air smelled fresh.

At 5:00 there is a complimentary wine bar with snacks. A very relaxed and engaging environment, where we met some very nice people who were visiting DC to see the memorials and monuments.

The hotel location is conveniently located to the Metro for easy access to downtown DC.

There are plenty of restaurants all well within walking distance. We found a very nice breakfast place across King St on the corner.

The Hotel has a fantastic piano bar, where local vocalists, from various shows and theaters in the area, come together and sing old show and theater songs. It was a fantastic arrangement of talent and humor - all for free.

Rooms are quiet and the beds are warm and comfy. You won't be disappointed. A must stay when find yourself in Old Town.

Room Tip: All rooms are decorated a little differently - not a bad room in the house.

Dear TVinoski,

It is great to see that you had a very pleasant stay at the Morrison House and that you took advantage of the opportunity to mingle with other guests during our manager hosted evening wine reception. I’m excited that you enjoyed our piano bar and that you took advantage of the many great dining options Old Town Alexandria has to offer.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience!

Sincerely,

Tobias

If I go to the DC/Alexandria area again, I would stay in the Morrison House again. The price we got on the Kimpton website was excellent and well worth the stay. The location of the hotel is close to King Street and accessible to many restaurants and sites as well as the free trolley to the King Street Station. We kept the car at the hotel and took the Metro into DC. The room was amazing and clean. The bed was probably one of the best hotel beds I ever slept on. The service was excellent. We had a few questions and our room wasn't available right away and the staff was accommodating. They also provided us with some excellent restaurant recommendations.

This was our second stay at Morrison House. It is by reputation the best, certainly the grandest, hotel in Alexandria and does the lovely Old Town neighborhood proud. Service was outstanding. Because it is small, we really had the feeling we could ask the staff for anything and we would soon have it. Shower cap? -- I'll bring one up. Where can I get an umbrella? -- there's one in your armoire. Several times we called the front desk to have our car out front in 5-10 minutes and it was always waiting for us.

I'm becoming a fan of Kimpton. As a member of their In Touch program I get free wi-fi and a $10 credit towards the well-stocked mini bar. When we checked out I mentioned that we had done some damage to the mini-bar but had the credit; the clerk said "Don't worry about it" and waved me away, so I'm guessing we won't get a trailing bill for it.

Sunday morning I searched for coffee shops on my phone -- there are plenty nearby -- but saw the hotel's morning coffee layout, tasted it, and didn't have to keep searching. New York Times outside the door Sunday and Monday mornings.

The room was small but well equipped and the bathroom was also compact but comfortable (two sinks, makeup mirror, dimmable lights. The bed had four large (long pillows), two firm and two soft, and was turned down with a little bag of chocolate chip cookies left for us on the coverlet.

Best of all, our rate was only $161/night including free parking. That's not a lot more than we might have paid at a mid-level chain hotel for a much less delightful experience.

Morrison House has a highly regarded restaurant. We have eaten there before but were not able to this time.

I wish every hotel was as a great a pleasure to stay in as this one.

We arrived Friday afternoon with another couple and were warmly greeted at the door. One room was ready and the other was not, so we hung out in the lounge and had coffee and read newspapers and magazines. In about 30 min. both rooms were ready. Ours was nicely appointed and very clean. we asked that the feather pillows be replaced with non-allergenic pillows and that was done promptly. We had 7:30 dinner reservations in the Grille/piano bar. The service was very good and the food was fair. But, the piano player was superb and the open mike brought out a very nice assortment of local singers. We stayed until midnight and would go back just for the piano bar -- it was that good.

Dear Harry C,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. Did you take your profile picture during dinner? I’m glad that you enjoyed your overall experience and in particular our piano bar. Washington Living voted the Morrison House best Boutique Hotel and Best piano bar this year. We are lucky to have such great talent such as Pat and Bob Smith who used to be the White House pianist between President Nixon and President Clinton. Did you sing?

See you next time,

Tobias
