“better than NYC Waldorf=Astoria”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

We had just spent a few nights in NYC's Waldorf=Astoria and the Monaco blew that hotel away in all aspects. The WA hotel rooms need to be gutted. The Monaco's rooms, exterior and lobby were beautiful and many people had brought their dogs. The valets were great. The hotel will lend you goldfish for your stay and you can order in-room spa services. Will definitely try and stay at Kimpton hotels in the future.

Dear teaspoon96,

Thanks so much for your feedback, we were extremely honored to be mentioned in the same company as the Walforf; they're one of the legendary hotels and it gives us a goal to keep working toward. Come back and see us soon, we'll have the goldfish waiting for you!

In the middle of December, we decided to grab the "kids" (two very spoiled Westies) and head to historic Old Town Alexandria for dinner with lifelong friends and some fun boutique shopping. I changed my reservation to Monaco from Lorien due to the park & play package price, requesting a Monte Carlo terrace room for just a few dollars more than the regular guest room.

From the moment we pulled up to the valet stand for an early check-in on Friday, to our midday departure on Sunday, the staff and accommodations provided a top tier experience. Our valet helped get our bags as well as the puppy bags, and introduced us to the bellman. Each staff member was genuinely friendly, and confidently offered their names and services with a smile. It was refreshing to have people greeting us and assisting us who appeared to be sincere and happy, as opposed to simply 'going through the motions'.

We arrived at the room the same time as our bellman, and he made sure everyone was comfortable, explained the robes, amenities, wine tasting hour and hotel layout. Even the puppies loved their bed and giant water bowl. While it was too chilly to enjoy the balcony, I envisioned sipping a cocktail on the balcony overlooking the courtyard. Though the rooms are non-smoking, the guests next door were smoking on their balcony and if the weather was nice enough to enjoy the outdoors, I would have been very unhappy. Otherwise, perfect!

The room was spacious and inviting, and the bed was soft but not too squishy and surprisingly comfortable (my typical preference is a firm/hard mattress). The linens were nice but not exquisite, with a little pilling of the fibers indicating it might be time to retire some of the bed linens. The robes and bath towels were fluffy and plentiful. I expected a separate shower and tub, but the marble shower and tub combination was perfectly suitable and squeaky clean. The one complaint was the HVAC was noisy at start-up and shutdown, so we turned the fan to "On" so it would not keep kicking on and off.

After strolling through some of the shops and scoping out a local jewelry store, we returned to the hotel for the wine tasting. I must say, wine tasting is a misnomer - this was wine *drinking*. They even had a cart of hot toddy ingredients for those who needed a little more 'warmth'. What a fabulous hour - wine, hot toddy, people watching. Staff members were circulating among the quests with the same level of friendliness and professionalism we observed when checking-in earlier.

Dinner at Jackson 20 was memorable - incredible comfort food with fresh, seasonal accents. We could not pass up the oysters, and they were worth skipping dinner for (though we did not). The pork chop was the size of a plate, and the bone-in steak could feed a family of four. Next time we will focus on sharing everything instead of sharing just the appetizers and dessert. The service in the restaurant was perfect - very proactive and thoughtful without rushing us or dragging out the meal until your tosh goes numb from sitting.

The rest of the weekend we enjoyed the hotel fitness center and 'wine tasting' with equal enthusiasm, and explored the shops of Old Town. We will be back, and we will bring friends. Our dilemma is: do we keep going back to the Monaco, or rotate between the other Kimpton hotels in and around Alexandria...decisions, decisions...

Room Tip: The courtyard balconies are very cozy, and the pet-friendly amenities are ideal for travelers with p...

Dear TrvlYogi,

Wow, thank you for the time and detail you took in outlining your experience with us. I'm very happy that you enjoyed yourself. Thank you so much for recognizing the work of our team, they're truly a wonderful group of people and we consider ourselves very fortunate to work with them. I appreciate as well the review of our Wine Hour, we honestly enjoy going to it as much as the guests do; it's a wonderful way to interact with our guests in a friendly setting. Regarding the decisions you need to make about future Kimpton stays, I'd suggest coming back and seeing us and perhaps ordering the ribs in Jackson 20 next time. They're so good that I have a buy back program; if you don't like them I'll buy them from you. No one's taken me up on them yet....

Thanks again and we'll see you soon,

Robert

Stayed at the hotel during the Christmas season in 2011. The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of the shopping of Old Towne (historic) Alexandria. You can walk in either direction and enjoy multiple shops, restaurants, antique shops, and more. Only a few easy blocks to the water.

The room was very comfortable, workout facilities were small but comparable to other smaller hotels. The funky atmosphere of the hotel is well balanced with professionalism of the staff. Valet only parking but they are very receptive to your needs. Evening reception included wine and other seasonal favorites.

We just returned from a terrific stay at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria. From the moment we entered the lobby, we felt relaxed and welcomed. The atmosphere is inviting, and the coffee and hot chocolate in the morning is terrific. There's even chocolate chips for the hot chocolate. The evening wine reception included hot cider and an optional "topping off" of scotch. Our room was spacious, incredibly well-decorated and the bathroom well-appointed with Aveda products. The entire hotel was immaculate and the gym had everything we needed. Our hats off to Jessy and Sam for their incredible management of this magnificent property. We hope we have the opportunity to visit again.

My wife and I had an enjoyable stay at the Monaco with our 9 month old son. I stay at Kimpton hotels often and the rooms at this hotel were as nice or better than most. Also, the location of the hotel was excellent, right in the center of old town, walkable to any number of great places to get any meal of the day. There is also a CVS right next to the hotel for anything you may have forgotten. Because we have the baby we use it as a great excuse to get an extra refrigerator placed in our room "for formula" and then stock it with bottled water and juice from the CVS to save on the $$ mini bar prices.

The room we had was a King room and there was plenty of room to roll our BOB stroller into it and store it in a corner. It was also easy navigating in and out of the hotel

As for Parking, don't bother trying to park yourself. You're paying almost $30 per night for parking anyway and the garage is really difficult to get around in. Just do valet, the service was excellent and the car was always available quickly

The only negative we experienced during this stay was that a room wasn't available for early check in. It was a Saturday morning we were checking in on so I wasn't really all that bent out of shape, but, we called very early and explained it would be ideal if we could get a room and they did not come through.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the hotel for it's room quality excellent location.

Dear Learned_TravelParent,

Thanks very much for your comments, I do appreciate your feedback about your experience with us. We've long been known as a pet friendly property, thanks so much for letting the world know that we're kid friendly too! Apologies for the misstep on the early check in, I completely agree that with a toddler we should have been able to come up with some options if we couldn't get you in right away. I'll share your feedback with the team, thanks again and we hope to welcome your family back soon.

This hotel was impeccably clean. You could not tell that dogs stay there. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My dog was comfortable on his zebra print bed and loved the ball and treats he was given on the way in. We would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Alexandria.  Jackson 20, the hotel restaurant served delicious comfort food and had very friendly employees  as well. Perfect location on King St! So many little shops and restaurants. King St is beautiful at Christmas time, with all the trees lit up and Christmas carollers singing.  Cute little doggy boutique called the Dog Park within walking distance, as well as several parks and a fenced dog park within a mile.  An easy ride or walk to the metro to go into DC. There is a free trolley that runs up and down King St from the waterfront to the metro. Very cheap parking at the parking garage on Fairfax (2 blocks from hotel). On the weekend, it's just $2 all day/ night. Definitely worth the short walk to save $20+ per night.  The Torpedo factory is a great little art scene down near the river. Very interesting, lots of artists with galleries and their studios- all free to visit. I can't say enough good things about this hotel and Alexandria, in general.

Dear Krismcooney,

Thanks very much for your kind words about your experience with us. We appreciate the feedback about our pet programs. We look at all of your family as your family; not just the two legged version! It doesn't hurt that we're in one of the most pet friendly communities in the US either. Come back and see us this summer for our famous Doggie Happy Hour!
