“Great price, location, and worth it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2012 via mobile

Drove from Chicago to sightsee DC, didn't want to pay outrageous prices for accommodations, found this gem online. We got there the Sunday after the storm and they had just gotten power turned back on. Staff was great checking us in and explaining the sporadic power, even went so far to call restaurants. Rooms were clean, beds were comfortable, breakfast was wonderful, my teens had no problem finding something to eat that they liked. Shuttle to Metro station was a pleasant surprise, we got the tickets before we started eating and shuttle was ready when we got done. Although the van only seats 11 we were the only riders both there and back.

Rode the Metro to DC, easy to navigate, got the all day pass $14.00, even went out to the. National Zoo. Great way to get a round and avoid traffic. We also avoided rush hour 7 am to 9am and 3pm to 6pm.

Coffee, water, and fruit were available all day, exercise room was clean and sufficient. They had a business center that I didn't have a need to use, pool closed a little too early for it to be usable for us, kids got about 20 minutes one night, closed at 9pm.

Had pizza delivered from Hot Stone Pizza one night, walked down to TGIF another night and decided the wait was too long ended up at Popeye's across the street. Restaurants within walking distance and delivery to the hotel, couldn't ask for anything else, great location.

If you are traveling without a car but want to explore Alexandria’s Old Town, the Waterfront or DC, the location of this hotel presents challenges. While it is a perfectly acceptable Hampton Inn; in fact, the staff and facility (especially the outdoor pool) are a cut above, it is about four miles from downtown Alexandria. The hotel does offer a shuttle to and from the King Street Metro/Old Town area but it operates on a limited schedule.

I arrived in Alexandria by Amtrak, whose station is adjacent to the King Street Metro station served by the Blue or Yellow Lines. Both lines stop at Washington National Airport (DCA) and have numerous DC stops. The King Street Metro station is located at the beginning of Alexandria’s Old Town district, and a free trolley to the Waterfront boards from the parking lot adjacent to the King Street Metro station.

I arrived at a time when the Hampton Inn’s shuttle was not operating. Rather than taking a taxi, I walked immediately across King Street to board the DASH AT6 public bus, operated by the Alexandria Transit Company. The bus stop is easy to find and well marked, and the driver was very accommodating. The fare is $1.50, and can be paid with dollar bills or coins. The route toward the Hampton Inn is shown as “To NVCC (Northern Virginia Community College)” on bus signage.

On the way toward the Hampton Inn, the last DASH AT6 stop is in the middle of the NVCC campus, at the intersection of W. Campus Lane and Dawes Avenue. The bus ride took less than 20 minutes. From this stop it is an easy six minute walk to the Hampton Inn. There are sidewalks the entire way.

Returning to the Alexandria Amtrak station, I walked back down Dawes Avenue and boarded the DASH AT6 bus marked “To King Street Metro, Eisenhower Metro.” Buses run every 30 minutes or so; here is the link to the DASH bus site: http://www.dashbus.com/. Be sure to take the DASH bus, and not the Metro bus.

If you don’t mind a short walk, the DASH AT6 bus is an excellent and frequent alternative to and from not only the train and Metro stations but Alexandria Old Town for dining and sightseeing.

My wife and I recently stayed at this property for a sightseeing tour of Washington. The hotel was selected by my sister, primarily for price and convenience to the nearest Metro station (we had balked at staying in DC at inflated prices and nightly parking charges for cars that would rarely, if ever, leave the hotel).

The hotel was clean enough (though a funky odor permeated the fourth floor hallway on our first day) and the breakfast was basic Hampton Inn fare. Our room was well attended by the housekeeping staff, and aside from the fact a discarded pizza box was allowed to be in the hallway for 12 hours (they ignored it even while delivering the daily USA TODAY), we had no complaints about anything on site.

The Metro shuttle service, however, was an entirely different matter. The Hampton shares a 14-passenger van with the Homewood Suites next door. The hours for shuttle service are limited to the peak morning and afternoon/evening hours (not a problem for us). However, what was really surprising was that in order to have a seat on one of the morning runs to King Street Metro (on the half hours) you had to get a shuttle pass 30 minutes before the scheduled departure (and I don't mean 31 minutes before). I have never had a hotel promoting itself has having free shuttle service force a guest to queue up like that and basically enter a shuttle lottery system. It is more than conceivable that your entry into the city will be delayed for at least 30 minutes if the other hotel fills up the shuttle, or you don't make it downstairs in adequate time to have your free "ticket". This is basically airline style "hurry up and wait" service. Even though the price is right for this Hampton, we really resented the hoops we had to jump through that weren't fully disclosed even at check in. Very confusing, and enough for us to pass this place next time we're in the area. We plan in the future to be closer to the Metro station (there's both a Hilton and Embassy Suites directly across the street).

Room Tip: Even numbered rooms face away from the street and overlook the pool.

Thank you for your comments concerning the complimentary shuttle to the Metro Station. This is a new service for the property, we have been running two shuttles from the Hampton and Homewood Suites by Hilton. I apologize if you encountered an issue with our boarding pass procedures and if one of the shuttles was not available. We constantly strive to improve our service, I would like to contact you directly so that we may discuss this in more detail and I may learn from your experience.

Finding a hotel room in the Washington DC area that's both reasonable and clean is daunting. We chose this location after searching hotel reviews, and found it to be a good choice. The first thing we noticed is that the room was clean and didn't smell "old". The bathroom looked like it may have been remodeled (maybe). What I really liked is that the counter also had 2 large shelves, which made it easy for my family to store all of their items without the clutter. There was the usual coffee machine, cups, and condiments - and all were clean and the machine wasn't dusty. They had a row of soaps and products, which has become more infrequent at some other hotels I've been staying at. There was a nice "cubby" shelf that held a lot of towels/washcloths. When we needed extra the next day, they were able to fill it quite nicely.

What is notable about this hotel/chain is that they are using a product called "Potatowear" that's supposed to be environmentally friendly. They also had other products and notes about how they recycle, etc. Interesting.

My husband complained that he thought the bed was too soft, but it was fine for me. Our kids all said that it was one of the best places that they've stayed! There was a digital safe, ironing board, wooden hangars, and an extra blanket that was zipped in a plastic case. Loved that extra blanket idea. The internet was fine and simple to access. TV had free movies. Local calls were free. Actually, a lot of things were free. Our only complaint is that the hot water and toilet were loud - you could hear it also in rooms surrounding you. That's something I've come across elsewhere, so I wouldn't let it hold me up from staying here.

As I was leaving, I saw a bunch of the help working in the rooms, curtains open, and cleaning the windowsills. That just doesn't get done everywhere. I didn't use the workout room or pool. Neither were really large, but they were both clean and maintained. Frankly, we're always too tired to swim or workout when we travel.

We will stay here again. Side note: We booked a great deal for this room through another company - there was a mixup - and Hampton still honored our lower price with no questions asked!

Room Tip: Rooms booked on the 1st floor on the back side of the property are a bit quieter since they're a...

What a GREAT hotel. This is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. So many amenities, such nice service, amazingly friendly staff, quiet location, free shuttle. We couldn't ask for a better time. We went to D.C. for the weekend and got there in less than 30 mins by public transportation. Free shuttle to the King St Metro station is 5 mins, metro is 10-15 mins to city center. Easy! We also did the Warrior Dash in Mechanicsville, MD. It was a simple hour ride there and back.

The beds and pillows are SO comfortable, everything is convenient/clean, elevators work great, shuttle is timely/runs often/driver is friendly. Front desk was friendly. There is a pool, free huge breakfast with the works, constant complimentary fresh coffee and fruit served. The hotel smells like clean laundry, parking is great, rooms are great, flat screen TVs, blow dryer, a/c is great, bathroom is a decent size.

I can go on for days about this hotel. A+++ - just great! Not to mention, the price was unbeatable.

Great hotel, clean room, very nice and friendly staff!! The thing you want most of all from a hotel is a comfortable bed. It was too hard and my back would not have been happy if we had to stay here more than one night.
