“Lovely Meal, Great Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We dined here during Alexandria Rest. Week--had the prix fixe 3-course meal. All three of us had a different entree and all were excellent. The wine selections were pricey but we had a $40 bottle of Rhone that was a great accompanyment and rated 91 pts by R. Parker. Would highly recommend this for a romantic meal, special occassion. The creme brulee and Grand Marnie souffle were wonderful desserts to end out night.

“Atrocious service ruined anniversary”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

That was the first time in 20 years that we did not leave a tip (we left $1). I went with my wife to quietly celebrate a private event. The food was fine with the exception of the desert, so were the employees – friendly nice and helpful….

The waiter on the other hand was a total disgrace. His English was barely comprehensible and he did not even make an effort to speak clearly, he never smiled, he did not bother to explain the menu, i.e. how the restaurant week worked or present other menu options. His attitude was rude, indifferent and condescending.

He kept our wine on ice, away from the table…and he never showed up to pour it into our glasses. Twice after waiting for more than 10 minutes with empty glasses we had to ask the boy cleaning the tables to bring us our wine. The waiter never showed up to check on us or inquire whether we were satisfied with the food and the service either. We are not picky and don't expect or need much but if they keep our wine away from the table they should at least be available to pour it when the glasses are empty. This was by far the worst service of our life and a disappointing evening.

“Good value in a French Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

My wife and I ate here during restaurant week and were very pleased. having booked through Open Table, I reviewed it there: This is a good French restaurant. We went for restaurant week. Service was very good and surprisingly fast. For appetizers, both the smoked trout and chilled potato soup (I can't spell visysoise) were delicious. The veal was very good for the cost. I found the port sauce a little sweet, but that is personal. I sometimes sip lemon juice. The soufflé my wife had was very good, and I enjoyed the sorbet selection. As good as the food was, we especially liked the quiet atmosphere. With table cloths, rugs, and well-spaced tables, it was possible to talk in a normal voice.

“Very Pretentious”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

I didn't have big expectations about French food in Alexandria and I was right.
The most French thing about this place is the pretentious/snobbish atmosphere and the rude lady in the front desk.
We came during the restaurant week in Alexandria, so we had a pre fix menu: 3 dishes = $35.
I had the mussels, crab cake and raspberry souffle. The food is very average. And the souffle sauce was very artificial and sugary.
If you want to have real French food make a favor to yourself and go to Europe.

“Quality maintained during Resraurant Week”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

La Bergerie is one of our favorites, but it received a few negative review from a past Restaurant Week, so we decided to dine there on the first day of the current Restaurant Week to see what was wrong. I saw nothing amiss. The menu was similar to the regular three-course price fixe menu, and there was extra staff to keep things moving. The only negative was that with the room full it was a little noisy.

On the way home I asked my wife to record her impressions, and when we arrived she immediately went to the computer and wrote:

“Our "regular", laid back yet elegant, romantic French restaurant maintained its excellence during restaurant week. As in a ballet, the orchestration of the wait staff expertise, clearing staff efficiency, and most of all the chef maestro (and his staff) performance with efficiently served hot food for a packed room was a step above we are sad to say. Sad, because of the potential of our quiet hideaway becoming front-line frantically competitive gastronomy for competing patrons. The crab cake and smoked salmon appetizers were right-portioned, and a perfect introduction to the main course. The pork chop was a delight, excitingly complemented with potatoes with a smoked bacon flavoring. The mahi mahi was perfect but surprise, surprise it was on a bed of quinoa (new to us) that was an excitingly perfect companion. The finale raspberry soufflé was a great, light ending. Bravo La Bergerie, sigh.”
