“Driving visitors beware!! Unfriendly parking meter regulations along king street. Will not return”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

Chose to drive to Old Town Alexandria vs. using metro due to metro's unreliability and the fact that I was hosting elderly guests. Thought Old Town would be a nice day out. I will never visit again. While legal parking was difficult ( to be expected) i received quite a surprise..... After finding a legal metered space, paying for two hours parking (no problem) and retrieving my car before meter expired, I was quite surprised to find a $40 ticket on my windshield for "misuse of meter". Meter person ticketed vehicle because the receipt had slipped down a bit-- although it was still visible AND clearly the meter had been paid as I did not receive a ticket for expiration. Rather than staying longer for dinner and shopping-- we left. I want to warn driving visitors about this practice. I don't know if it is limited to this meter policeman or a city wide practice, but it is not very tourist friendly AND an unreasonable charge to top it. I would have loved to see more of old town since I had not been there in 20 yrs., but if this is how they operate, it isn't worth it. I find a visit filled with "fear" that I will receive a random "misuse of meter" ticket not worth the trouble. Sometimes, you just can't use the metro and we are more than an hour away travel time.

“Free Trolly, Quaint Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

Old Town has incredible restaurants, tons of vintage shops, and an old world feel. You can dine at Gadsby's where George Washington had dined, get homey pho, or get an upscale experience at Vermilion/Brabo. Must visit for people with children/dogs or couples.

“Beautiful town, great boutique shopping”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

King street is full of great boutique shops. It's crowded during the day, but morning and evening were nice to stroll around.

“A neat place to explore early American history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

Took my family here after spending time at the Washington Mall. While there we stopped at a store called the Christmas Attic and picked up a few scavenger hunt maps we had read somewhere would be good for the kids. The maps walked you around the sites in Old Town, giving historical information along the way. It was quick but my kids enjoyed.
Needless to say, the visit to Old Town was worth a quick stop especially while in the DC area.

“Touristy Nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

Old Town Alexandria is definitely catered to tourists. There are many nice, cute shops, lots of restaurants, candy stores, boutiques, and miscellaneous stores. It's a beautiful walk along King St from the King St Metro to the waterfront. You can take the free trolley that runs up and down King St from the metro station but you'll miss out on the various shops and experience. I suggest you walk down towards the waterfront, so you can enjoy the shops and food places, then take the free trolley back towards the metro station if that is where you started from.
