“nice place, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2009

This is a great place, very clean, friendly staff, free internet, and the free breakfast much better than the usual. The location is wonderful, right on King St in Old Town, Alexandria, a street full of shops and restaurants, with a trolley that runs up and down the street. There are lots of historic houses nearby. Washington DC is just a short drive, and there's a metro nearby.

This is our second stay this year--went to Carlyle Club nearby for dinner and dancing. We have stayed in about 12 or more Hampton Inns this year in MD, FL, VA and I consider this the best or at least tied for best. Small, easy to find, calm part of town.

Heating is not noisy, rooms are comfortable and all utilities worked--toilet, shower. Breakfast adequate and included, parking inside garage for $12 very reasonable. convenient to metro, convenient and walkable to Old Towne Alexandria. Very clean--even the stairwells smelled clean and scrubbed.

In other HIs we stayed this year, a toilet didn't flush, the heating was so loud I couldn't sleep, neighbors were noisy, bar too close to rooms, so when I say this one is excellent, I mean no complaints whatsoever.

PS Stay away from ice machines and elevators when you can in any hotel if you are a light sleeper.

Stayed two nights for sightseeing and two Met games. Great location in terms of the metro. It is about 25 minutes into the Smithsonian area with one transfer. The ball park is about 30-35 and anticipate big crowds, delays, etc., especially leaving.

Parking was in the garage behind the hotel, but it is not well marked. Park out front to check in and directions will be given. I had a satellite view of the area and that helped immensely. Elevators are slow. Overall, a great stay. Friendly, helpful staff. Rooms were clean, comfortable, and everything worked from the t.v. to warm showers to the air conditioning. Above average free breakfast buffet and complimentary newspapers.

One thing about the location: zero nightlife except for Joe Theismann's around the corner (and they gave last call at 11 pm on the Wed & Thurs we were there). If you want more, it's 10 blocks down. During the day a free trolley will save you the walk.

Washington was the final destination of our holiday in the USA having started off with four nights in New York and travelling through the Skyland Drive to spend one night in the Skyland Resort and one night in Front Royal. We then spent four nights sunbathing in Virginia Beach before heading towards Washington. We didn't have a hotel booked before hand and a friend had recommended Alexandria as a base to explore Washington. Before settling in Alexandria we checked out Crystal City but did not think that it looked as inviting as Alexandria. We tried a few hotels for availability but found that the Hampton Inn was most reasonable at $154 per room exc taxes. The hotel itself was very comfortable and the rooms had everything we needed and were very clean. We also enjoyed a nice breakfast with a hot choice each morning along with fresh juices, fruit, cereal, tea, coffee etc. The hotel also has a nice outdoor pool not that we had time to use it because we had so much to cram into a three night stay. The biggest plus for this hotel is that it is walking distance from the metro and it took us approx 15 mins to get to Washington with trains running every ten mins. Alexandria itself has a lot of bars and lovely restaurants - the only problem is there are too many to choose from. We ate in a beautiful french restaurant along the main street called Bistrot Lafayette and it was absolutely beautiful - in fact it was the best meal we had throughout our entire holiday. Bottles of wine are half price on a Monday night and the food is just delicious - my fillet steak was cooked to perfection. Alexandria was the perfect location for staying close to Washington and not having to stay in it. We got the metro to Washington and visited the White House, the Washington Monument, Capital Hill, the Air and Space Museum, the Lincoln Monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (very touching), the Korean War Memorial and the WWII Memorial. We also stumbled across the Crime and Punishment Museum (just below the Verizon Centre) - it was excellent and took us two hours to get around it. It costs approx $16. On our final day we drove to Arlington Cemetery and visited JFKs grave, the Unknown Soldier Memorial and witnessed a funeral of a soldier killed in Iraq. Although this was a memorable day it was also a very sad day and one that I will never forget. Arlington cemetery was completely awe inspiring. Iwo Jima Memorial is also worth seeing - a US Marine Memorial. I should mention that on our last night we took the metro to Washington to see Neil Diamond in concert in the Verizon Centre - so it may be worthwhile checking out concerts as they attract big name artists. Washington was a great experience and I will definitely return one day and I will definitely stay in the Hampton Inn in Alexandria because it was a good hotel in a great location.

We had a '2 double bed' room on the 5th floor. The rooms are small. It probably can't be helped, as the buildings in this area were likely built some time ago. The Hampton is very well kept up and looks new inside.
In our room with 2 double beds, space was tight. The room was squarish and the room was only the width of 3 double beds if they were to be placed side by side. From the foot of the beds to the wall, it measured about 5 feet. With the furniture against the wall taking up some of that 5 feet, we barely had enough floorspace to put the suitcases down and walk by. It was a bit tight for a 2 adults and 2 kids, but it turned out fine. The elevators in the building took forever, but it seems every other hotel these days has an elevator slowdown problem.

On the positive side, the staff are all VERY friendly and pleasant. The front desk staff knew job and were helpful. Our room was quiet as well. Housekeeping was satisfactory every day we stayed there.
This Hampton Inn is at a GREAT location that you can use as a base to visit DC. It's a 5 minute walk over to the Metro station (King Street station). Having the station so close let us get into DC and back again at any hour pretty easily. It's about 20 minute ride into DC on the Metro.

The hotel is right in 'Old Town' Alexandria, which itself can offer a day's worth of sightseeing. There are numerous shops and restaurants along King Street. The area is pleasant and safe at night and we were never accosted by any panhandlers. There was an Italian restaurant called Ristorante Giranio a few blocks away on King St. that we visited twice (moderate price, not cheap).

The garage is accessed by an alley in the back of the hotel and
the front desk can give you a map of how to get back there. Note they charge $10 to park in the garage, not unusual for a downtown area.

In addition to the usual continental breakfast items, there was a different hot, protein item each day. We had pork sausage,
ham, or smoked sausage. There were eggs (done 'over hard') every day.

The overall experience at this hotel was so good that we considered cancelling our reservation with the hotel in downtown DC for the next week and staying the 2nd DC week here as well! But, we had already made plans to meet up with relatives at a hotel in DC itself for the 2nd week.

Aside from the size of the rooms, this hotel is all good!
I would definitely bring my business to this Hampton Inn again!

This hotel has a great location for transportation and restaurants.. We stayed here four days while doing business and sightseeing in Washington DC. The metro station is an easy walk from the hotel. For dinner, we caught the free shuttle to the many good restaurants and bars in the charming old town area. The free continental breakfast had a wide variety of choices. Although we had a standard room, it was still fairly spacious and included an easy chair and ottoman, a desk, and a chair. All the staff members were very friendly and helpful.

  • Liked — The room and bed were very comfortable.
  • Disliked — The water in the pool could have been a bit warmer.

We can't say enough good things about this hotel. The room was well-apportioned and very clean. The entire staff for the hotel was very cordial and extremely helpful. The location is perfect for getting around DC. You are a short 2 blocks from the Metro station and 8 blocks from the Old Town area. Access to I95 and I495 is very close and easy to reach. The parking is only an additional $10 per day which is reasonable for the DC area. Locating the garage was difficult prior to checking in, but the staff provided a good map and good directions. We would definitely return to this hotel. Definitely one of the top Hampton Inns that we have stayed at within the past 5 years.
