“If you're snooty or think you are the bee's knees, just take yourself on down the road...”
I don't know where to begin, as I cannot say enough good things about this place. But here goes... I reserved a room about 8 days prior to my stay, and when I called the hotel the day of my scheduled arrival to let them know that I would be there around 6:30ish rather than the 3:00pm check-in time, the clerk at the desk confirmed that my room was all ready to go and I could show up early if I wanted to (this was around noon). I was sorry that I couldn't. So later on, I drove down to the hotel, which was very easy to find, and arrived about 5:45pm on a Monday. Upon arrival, I was informed that on Mondays and Thursdays there was a free "Manager's Dinner" (which included free beer and wine!!) and the food that would be served was on "the menu" in my room - I was pleasantly surprised to hear such a thing. Check-in was a breeze, and then I carried the rest of my bags up to my room. There are two elevators in the lobby, which was very convenient, and there was also stairs to left (at the end of the hallway) and to the right (at the end of the hallway). I stayed on the second floor, so I took the stairs a lot. Upon arrival in my room, I entered a little kitchenette that had everything a person would need - coffee maker, microwave, a pretty decent-sized refrigerator (way bigger than a mini, but by no means a full size) a sink, dish-washing liquid, bowls, pots and pans, a corkscrew, silverware, I mean you name it. And... it even had a stainless steel frigidaire dishwasher!! I saw "the menu" on the refrigerator door and noticed that it was taco night that night. It was about 6:15pm at this point, and I moseyed back on down to the first floor to eat at the free Manager's Dinner (I was starving from my 3 1/2 hour drive to the hotel - and I had only eaten breakfast that day...). Everything was fresh, and the food was actually good! I just didn't expect that for some reason, and I am always hesitant when something is "free", but this place didn't pull any punches. The dining area was very clean and cozy. Along the right side wall was bench seating / cushioned seats (with tables) and pillows scattered about. In the middle, there were bar-type tables with stools (not uncomfortable ones either). On the other side of the dining area along the wall, there were cozy little tables each with a little flower on each of them. There was a bar area too where the drinks were served, and at least 2 flat screen t.v.s were on the wall (there were at least two more t.v.s throughout the lounge / eating area) for your viewing pleasure. The colors were modern and interesting, and the entire atmosphere was very inviting. It had to have been, because I'm not a people person or one who likes to be in crowds, and I felt right at home at this place. After I ate and watched t.v., I went upstairs and did my FULL INSPECTION of the room like I do. Granted, the place was not "oh-so 2012" but it was clean. That's the word - CLEAN. I could tell the building was old due to some of the room's dimensions, and the bathroom was a wee bit smaller than I prefer, but hey, no complaints from me. Everything functioned just fine and the toilet was super powerful (I like that). I watched the free cable that night until I fell asleep. I woke up, got ready for work (I was working in Washington D.C. so I chose this place for the convenience), and went down to another free meal - breakfast!! This was no muffin / bagel / juice breakfast either - this was scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, grits, home fries (w/ peppers and onions!!) sausage gravy, biscuits, waffles... and more (and yes, of course, muffins, bagels, and juice too). Coffee was there as well as milk (skim, 1%, 2%, whole / D, and chocolate) and there was a machine that had orange juice and apple juice. It was a great way to start the day. The shuttle to the D.C. metro system ran promptly every 1/2 hour from 6am - 2pm. After 2pm, it was "upon request" and when I would return from work in the evening, I would call the shuttle and it was there in 10-15 minutes always as promised!! (the hotel is/was 2 miles from the Van Dorn Street Metro Station stop). So that's how my week went - way more free meals than I would have ever expected, constant shuttle service (I was able to keep my car parked all week, it was great!), and a very cozy and comfortable room to come home to after work and to wake up in the a.m. and get ready for work. Oh yeah, and high-speed internet - wireless. I worked remotely in the room that week too and this wireless was a lifesaver. GREAT CONNECTION. The staff was fantastic - very friendly, very knowledgeable, and very accommodating. I give a "4" for location, since you do have to take a cab or the shuttle or drive to get where the action is, but that can be a good thing, since it isn't right on the beaten path. One stand out thing I was so impressed with was when I got home from work one day, staff had been in my room (which I had a MESS in there of clothes and papers, etc.) and actually took the dirty dishes I had made and left in the sink and they put them in the dishwasher for me. I thought something was weird when I walked in the room and smelled that fresh dishwasher detergent. Very cool. Also, they cleaned up AROUND MY MESS!! They did not disturb a thing and I sooooo appreciate that. I want to keep this short, because I could go on and on, but I will say that one night I wanted some nightlife so I stepped outside to get a cab to go to Shooter McGees (recommended to me by the front desk - I would recommend this place to you as well, very cool place. VERY small, but very cool). A cab pulled up, and some lady got out, yelled for the cabbie to "Stay put! - I don't even know if I'm staying here, they [her employer] aren't just going to put me up anywhere!! - so you stay put..." Hoping this rude broad would be staying so the cabbie could get me up the road to Shooter's, she storms back out and yells out "Oh no, Oh no, I'm not staying in this DUMP!!! - YOU [to the cabbie] - get my bags back in the trunk, what ARE YOU DOING WITH THEM OUT?!?!?! - I did NOT tell you to take my bags out of the trunk, I told you I might not be staying here, AND I'M NOT - I don't stay in slums...." --- And they were off. I don't know what was wrong with this lady, and I had to take the next cab that showed up to the bar, but I couldn't imagine going through life being a snob like that. Yeah, the Wyndham isn't "the prettiest", but it was a great stay and I would not hesitate to go there again the next time I have to be in D.C. - if you are like this lady, don't bother - go spend way too much money and stay in D.C. on Connecticut Avenue or something. Nobody wants to be around people like that anyway..... - This place is a perfect example of why you don't judge a book by it's cover.
Room Tip: I stayed on the second floor and loved it!! The way the hotel is laid out, I would suspect that the...
