“Exceptional experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

My wife and I have been staying in Bed and Breakfasts across Europe and North America for over twenty years. Our recent two night stay at the Peake-Fairfax House was a truly exceptional experience for us. A lovely home, delicious breakfasts and, most of all, charming, gracious and extremely helpful hosts. Dorothy and Chet could not have been more hospitable.

The location in the heart of Old Alexandria is ideal, both for enjoying the local history and amenities, as well as for visiting nearby Washington, DC and environs.

I couldn't recommend the Peake-Fairfax House more highly.

We recently stayed at the Peake-Fairfax House, and we truly had a wonderful time! Being from Texas, I read all the reviews to find a place to book for our visit, and I can honestly say that all the wonderful things written in the previous reviews are all true. Chet and Dorothy make you feel right at home, like you're family more than a guest. Everything is very nice, clean, and cozy. The healthy breakfasts were very good, and you get expert advice on everything to see and do in the area. We were late arriving the first evening due to flying and then driving 3 hours, but they were gracious and welcoming. They both took turns taking us to the subway connection to DC on different mornings. The location of this place is fantastic - close to everything! The whole stay was pure enjoyment, mainly because of the Nagle family...just wonderful people!

The Peake was a pleasant experience. Only one block from the bustling King Street, home of excellent shops and restaurants, but the house is surprisingly quiet. Probably the solid construction of the home. They certain don't make homes like the Peake anymore. Which is one of many reasons I prefer a B&B over a hotel. Quiet. No noisy neighbors making a ruckus.

Anyway, the hosts are as nice as can be. Breakfasts were ample, and I enjoy not having to get up early to abide by an owner's breakfast schedule. Anytime between 8-11 am is ok. Old Town Alexandria is so beautiful and quaint. And a nice 20+ mile trail along the river is only a couple blocks from the place..

A great experience. My only quibble was the room was little hot and stuffy. I'm an open window person and used the fans provided, but the air conditioning didn't quite make it up to the 3rd floor very well and I could have used it. Then again the house is almost 200 years old. The temps for October were crazy high (88 degrees daytime), so I can understand.

Anyway, give the P-F a try.

Two wonderful nights, engaging conversations and excellent dining recommendations highlight our stay at the Peake-Fairfax House in Alexandria. The home is exceptionally well appointed, and breakfast included my favorite foods for that meal (Greek yogurt, seasonal fresh fruit, and many choices of organic breads). I sincerely hope we will have an excuse to return in the near future. Be certain to ask about the books and literary authored by the host family.

Room Tip: There is a very comfortable king-sized bed available.

The Peake-Fairfax House sounded like just what we were looking for when we visited Washington DC in June, and we weren't disappointed. The location is perfect: right in the heart of Old Town Alexandria and an easy walk and Metro ride to the city. Dorothy and Chet couldn't have been more hospitable, and we very much appreciated their suggestions for restaurants and museums as well as their wonderful croissant for breakfast. Their home is truly a treasure, full of period paintings, furniture, and collectibles. This is surely the place for pure comfort and insiders' comments in beautiful surroundings!

If you have never been to Washington the the Peake-Fairfax House is an excellent base. Your hosts discuss your plans with you and make very informative suggestions about sights, pace and restaurants. Being so close to Kings Street in Alexandria means that your evenings can be spent at interesting restaurants an easy walk away (Okay, I did some shopping too.). In five nights we had lots of choice and enjoyed the atmosphere. Chet suggested we see Mt Vernon, an easy drive away and we were so glad we did. Arlington Cemetery was a few train stops away and we had no difficulty getting into Washington each day. We walked to the train each morning and gratefully road the free trolley down Kings Street each night.
Breakfasts were healthy (cold cereal, fruit, yogurt, croissants and boiled eggs or cheese). I liked eating at the dining table with fellow guests and sharing insights and travel experiences. The rooms are on the third floor so be prepared to get your cases up the stairs ( worth the climb). Dorothy and Chet kindly washed some clothes for me which when you are travelling a long time is much appreciated. Linens are changed after 5 days so ration your towels accordingly.
Our stay at the Peake-Fairfax House was a highlight of a three and a half week trip on the East Coast. All the Nagles are WONDERFUL hosts and a stay with them is excellent value.

Room Tip: Choose the Palladian Suite because it has its bathroom ensuite and has black out blinds. The Poetry...

Peake-Fairfax House was perfect for our mini vacation in Old Town Alexandria. The Nagles are wonderful hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed our talks with them. We purchased one of Chet's books and can't wait to read it. We were treated as part of the family (and maybe we are!). It was extraordinary to find a connection with not only a place in England but also a family name. We will certainly return to Peake-Fairfax House when next in Alexandria.
