“Exactly what a "hotel" should be!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

Be warned, I am an avid KImpton fan: clean and everything works, very comfortable, pet friendly, free wi-fi for members, one time $10 mini bar credit per stay, outstanding service and staff is extremely nice, paper at the door in the morning, free wine 5-6 p.m., nice coffee and tea in the mornings, nice toiletries - just to name a few. Now for the review of the property - this one in Alexandria Virginia.

We played tourist with our good friends from California and wanted a place that could serve as our base for three nights while touring Washington DC and historic sites in Virginia (Montpellier and Monticello) - an hour and 30 minutes away. We chose Kimpton because 1) it is a Kimpton, 2) the location. We got more than we expected. We went over memorial day weekend and got a rate of $109 (incredible) and before we checked in asked for early arrival and foam pillows (do this while making reservations). Alexandria was easy to get to, hotel easy to find, immediately greeted by valet who said if we forget anything in the car just call and they will immediately retrieve as car is parked close.

Property is located on King Street in Alexandria and who would know, King Street is the main drag with cute shops and eateries all along down to the waterfront with a free shuttle that runs the length (although we walked for all but a short bit and it was nice). We had a great time that afternoon and all is well. Had a few good beers and snacks in one of three on-site restaurants which was also very nice although the Brabo Tasting Room was a bit small.

Next day did DC and imagine this - the Metro is a 5 minute walk (King Street Station). We bought a day pass and went into DC for the Memorial Day Parade and touring - awesome.

OK getting a little long winded here, my apologies - in essence, if you are looking for a consistently high performing, well thought out, friendly/accepting, energetic, clean brand hotel, Kimptons are the place. We have stayed at two other Kimpton's in DC (DuPoint Circle and one other - unable to recall location) but had the same experience.

A great location for a great "boutique" hotel. An excellent experience. Go you will enjoy and have a ton to do between VA and DC.

Forgot to mention they have a spa and I think I heard 24 hour fitness center - we didn't use either.

Room Tip: We stayed in 322 - two double beds with shower and tub. Just enough room. They are running a speci...

Hi Skip H,

I am glad you enjoyed all your usual Kimpton benefits as well as our restaurant options and location near the Metro station. Strolling down King Street, checking out all the shops and restaurants, is certainly a great way to spend the afternoon. Perhaps you will have a chance to visit the Spa next time.

We hope to see you again soon,

Thomas

We stayed at the Lorien hotel and spa for 4 nights in May and it was in general a good stay. The room was clean, the bathroom was well equipped with towels and other necessities, the beds were comfortable.
However, the AC, which we never figured out, was a little noisy. And as I mentioned, we never figured out how to set it at a more comfortable temperature. The room was a bit chilly.
Also, we got a room in a corner, making our room a little dark with only one window facing our neighbor's balcony. That didn't do much for the natural day light to find its way into our room. However, we didn't spend that much time in the room during daylight.

Our biggest beef was with the bathroom sliding door. The frosted glass made a perfect screen for our silhouettes to reveal our every move in the bathroom. The huge mirror on the wall across the hallway from the bathroom made sure that you could see what was happening in the bathroom no matter where you were in the room. The sliding door also lacked to provide us with the feeling of intimacy while visiting the bathroom since there is about a one inch glitch between the sliding door and the wall.
A bit pretentious with a designer touch for the bathroom door rather than what's practical.

The staff was friendly, although not as friendly as other reviewers have written. Maybe it was because they were busy with the dinners and other happenings that were being held during our entire stay, but we sometimes felt neglected and invisible while passing by the reception desk. Or maybe we didn't dress fancy enough?

Also, upon checking out, the woman in the reception didn't notice that our room was already pre-paid and wanted to charge the credit card I had presented while checking in.

I love Old Town Alexandria, it's a beutiful little town, and given that the price of the room is ok I'd definitely stay at the Lorien again.

Hello Carina H,

I am sorry you experienced difficulties with the operation of the AC controls and found it to be a bit noisy. I appreciate your thoughts on the contemporary design of the bathroom door. Please accept my apologies if our Front Desk team wasn’t their usual engaging selves every time you passed by the desk, and that we had a potential oversight relative to your billing.

I look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back,

Thomas

The Lorien is a lovely hotel. It is clean, comfortable, and very well designed. There is something extremely pleasing about staying in a well-designed hotel—a hotel that is designed with some care—like the designers care, really care, about what they are doing. Although our room was not very large, it was extremely comfortable and clean, and the colors and layout was pleasant and soothing. The bathroom has an open and modern shower.

The staff was excellent.

If you’re staying in Alexandria, you can’t do much better than the Lorien.

Based on prior reviews, I was expecting the hotel to be a little nicer. The room itself was nice and the service was generally good as was the food. However, my main issue was the mold in the bathroom shower, which was disturbing, especially when traveling with a child. This is the first time I've seen mold in a hotel room and for the caliber this hotel claims to be, it is not acceptable to me. Unfortunately we did not use the shower until the next day (one night stay) so we could not do anything about it.

Hello nmc525,

Please accept my apologies for this cleaning oversight, and certainly rare occurrence. We pride ourselves on providing an extremely clean environment for our guests, so they can relax with confidence, in any area of the hotel. I have already inspected your guest room and our Housekeeping team has taken the necessary steps to remedy the situation.

We look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back.

If you're looking to stay in Old Town, this is a great choice. Good value at the rate, though the extras (spa services, room service, mini bar) are killers. But the staff is great and the rooms are nice; the beds are comfortable and you can't beat the location.

Just make sure you're a Kimpton rewards member; they offer nice little perks.

Room Tip: I got an email the day before the stay offering relatively low-priced upgrades, including $25 for a...

I stayed at the Lorien with some colleagues on a business trip. It is in a wonderful location as it is located by many great restaurants and shops. It is right down the road from the George Washington Masonic Memorial, which was an interesting place to see. After a busy day working, it was such a great to be greeted to a complimentary glass of wine. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. The room was very nice. There were so many special touches to be found at this hotel such as having a computer in the room. Also, the courtyard is a wonderful place to relax. The front desk staff and bellmen could not have been more helpful. It was evident that they wanted to provide exemplary service. I would like to return to this property again to spend more time in this area.

Hello trvgrl422,

I am glad you and your colleagues chose our hotel as you base camp for your business trip to the DC area. King Street running through the heart of Alexandria certainly has many shopping and dining options, and of course the Metro stop just two blocks from us. I was pleased to note you were able to unwind at the end of the long work day with a glass of wine, out in the courtyard if you should choose. We look forward to assisting you during your next visit.

Cordially,

Thomas

This is one of the best Kimptons I've stayed in, by far. I live in the area and sought refuge here during a power outage. The manager was extremely gracious and gave me a discounted "power outage" rate! My room was such a calming oasis of light blues, silver, and white. I didn't want to leave! All the staff members I encountered were quite professional and friendly. Room service is quick, great amenities, comfy beds! What more could one ask for!?
