“More than meets the eye”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2010

One of the nicest holiday inn's that I have stayed at. I had a nice big room with a comfortable King Bed. Everything worked well in the room. The front desk was very helpful on a number of things. They provided a shuttle to and from the airport, and to and from the historic downtown, which is about one mile west of the hotel. When the computer room went on the fritz, the front desk was very helpful and gracious about printing my boarding pass, as well as other material which I needed for meetings. This is a very nice hotel, located in a nice area of a nice city.

Stayed here whilst attending a military Reunion at the same hotel. We got a good room rate in connection with Reunion. When we checked-in the staff were very pleasant and there were plenty of people manning reception so although there were many checking-in we only had to wait about 5 minutes. We had a large room with 2 queen beds each with a large selection of pillows, the bathroom was large and clean. We had a buffet breakfast every morning and the cooked food was fresh and kept topped up all the time - possibly could have done with more than 1 toaster as there were up to 100 at breakfast each day. We only ate dinner on the gala evening - it was a very good meal. The only slight drawback was that the hotel stated on it's web page that the hotel courtesy bus would take you whereever you wanted in a close raduis - when we enquired at about 1200 to go to Old Town about 1 mile away we were told next bus was not until 1430 - the post had implied if the bus were available then they woud take you straight away.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a military move and were initially quite pleased that the HI seemed to fit our very tight budget (we were given a government rate along with free parking and free kid meal vouchers). They even allowed us to add a day on the front end of our reservation. However, when we checked out they tried to charge us almost double what we were quoted and acted as if we should be grateful that we were given that rate at all. The reasons given were numerous and mostly said in an effort to shift responsibility onto our shoulders. After a lengthy discussion the matter was resolved but we were left feeling like they tried to scam us.

While we stayed at the hotel (3 nights total) the only positive service came from the housekeeping staff and they were great.

Pros:
*can bring large pets
*walking distance to dog park and walking paths (one block from river)
*housekeeping staff is great

Cons:
*meal vouchers cannot be used for room service so if you have a pet, and kids with you, expect to end up paying for all meals...unless you can figure out how to brig everyone along and not leave pets behind
*wait staff treats you much differently when the meal vouchers come out (we waited for utensils, tables, food and sometimes had no service at all)
*wait staff looks miserable and acts about the same
*location is not close to restaurants and shopping- at least a mile walk and when you have little kids that isn't as easy as it sounds
*rate charges not straight forward

We apologize for the inconvenience of the billing issue and managed to resolve the issue with the client then and there. We do acknowledge that we do not accept meal vouchers cannot be used for room service under the Government Per Diem rates because of the Service and Delivery Charge.

All Room Service deliveries have an 18% Service Charge and $2 Delivery Charge added to the bill and unfortunately, the meal voucher does not cover these charges. Meal Vouchers are for breakfast meals only and must be used by the Government employee only (not transferable to any family member).

Our restaurant management staff thanks the guests for his opinion regards to staff uniforms and will take all opinions into consideration soon when we order new uniforms. We are also refreshing our staff members in our grooming policy in our daily Stand Up meetings. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts.

In regards to area restaurants, there are several Food & Beverage establishments in the immediate area, including Villa D'Este about 1 block away from the hotel, "Thailand on Royal Street" two blocks away, Bastille Restaurant three blocks away, and The Perfect Pita two blocks away. King Street is the official "City Center" of Alexandria Virginia and is popular among tourist and has many restaurants and is about 9 blocks south from the hotel which in turn is about a 10-12 minute walk.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE, EVER! I stayed in a non-smoking room, for I do NOT smoke. My fiance left an empty pack of cigarretes in the trash can. I was charged $250 for the room "reaking of smoke"! Which was COMPLETELY BOGUS! I was assured from the hotel manager that I would be refunded. After a month, I still had not recieved any funds. I called the hotel to follow up, I was then told someone would look into it ASAP. One of their brilliant employees tried to credit my account, but instead CHARGED me another $250! Another employee noticed this, and tried to correct it...but AGAIN CHARGED ME ANOTHER $250! $750 in charges & 2 months later, I still have reveieved NOTHING except the run around! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!

We acknowledge the double charge to client and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Fortunately, we were able to refund the client any due moneys.

Even though the hotel informs each client upon Check-In about the non-smoking policy and of the $250 charge for any smoking activity in the sleeping rooms, our housekeepers try their best to determine that the current occupants did smoke and not the previous occupants.

Again, in behalf of the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites, I sincerely apologize for the double charge.

Nice rooms but there is nothing around! Grocery store across the street but that's about it.
Bad news, the internet access doesn't work in the rooms. Only the lobby. Useless in rooms
I ate at the little sandwich shop in the lobby which was convenient, but soup sandwich pie muffin and soda was $19.00
Be sure you have a car before you stay here. Airport van is shared with another hotel too

This hotel is pretty upon entering and the front desk staff are nice. However, the room itself was just so-so. It appears to be rather old and the carpet is kind of stiff and dingy. The bed and pillows are comfortable, however. Most off-putting to me was that the cleaning staff apparently uses some kind of air-freshener that smells like a mixture of wintergreen and cherry. It was enough to practically knock me out coming in the door of my room--every morning! Also, if you get in late good luck reaching the front desk staff. Three nights in a row I tried to call for a wake-up call and it just rang and rang. Same for when I called to inquire about check-out. Not cool. I actually observed the hotel staff sitting in the guest chairs around the lobby talking instead of behind the counter-right after I tried to call. Frustrating! There is a bar and a restaurant here, but both are pretty dead. I think I saw a total of three people use them. There is also a little cafe in the lobby that serves cafe fare, pizza, and sandwiches--but pricey. A personal sized (small) pizza and soda was about $13. Parking was ridiculous at $20 a night for a tiny space underneath the building. There is no refrigerator in the room and no microwave--something my new hotel has (at half the nightly rate). "High speed internet" was slow and spotty. NO CELL PHONE RECEPTION IN ROOM. Very little storage to put away clothes. Overall, I paid over $200 a night for a room here and it really wasn't worth more than $75.

My husband and I and our 2 kids stayed at the Holiday Inn for 6 nights. We chose Alexandria because we wanted a charming town away from the hustle and bustle of DC yet not too far. This fit that criteria. Alexandria is a lovely town! Nice hotel, nice decor and looks like it was renovated within the last few years. Beds are very comfortable too. It offers shuttles to Reagan airport every 1/2 hour, which is the nearest metro. The pool hours are from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Kids would have liked more. The grocery store right across the street was very convenient. Internet connection was good too. Although the TV was nice, the reception was not. Something funky going on with the electricity in the bathroom. Only one plug in the outlet worked and it was intermittent. The neighborhood is very safe and there is plenty of parking around the hotel. It was a nice hotel for the price!
