“Undergoing much needed renovation”

Upon arriving on a very rainy July 11, we found the front entrance closed due to paving work. There was a handwritten piece of paper taped to the corner of the building directing us to a side door. Not a flattering entrance, because of heavy cigarette smoke odor, dark small hallway, and carpets were worn and dated. While waiting for several minutes at the unattended front desk, we had plenty of time to read the "pardon our construction noise" and "pardon our mess" posters, and the pets welcome sign. Since no one appeared at the front desk, we left and checked in next door at a newer-looking and $20 less expensive hotel. Perhaps when the renovations are complete, the Holiday Inn Express will make a nice impression upon arrival.

This hotel is a good value for the money. It is very easy to get to, less than a quarter of a mile off the interstate. There is a movie theater less than one mile away. Also, right up the street is a pizza place called Bella's - great pies, definitely worth the visit.

The rooms are rather large - mine included a sleeper sofa, coffee table, and work desk. Nice large bathroom with full length mirror and shower with an adjustable shower head. Bed was a tad firm, but having a pair of both soft and firm pillows to choose from was nice.

Breakfast had a number of options - cold cereal, hot oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, muffins, bagels, and cinnamon rolls. This was a better selection than at a lot of other hotel's 'continental breakfasts.'

While the hotel is right by the interstate (I could see it from my second floor room), the rooms are insulated well, and I was not able to detect any road noise during the night.

Staff is very friendly and willing to help. About 20 minutes after I check in, the front desk called to make sure that everything in the room was satisfactory. Its these kinds of little things that can help make business travel more bearable, and the HIE in Abingdon does a good job of making sure that all its guests are taken care of.

This is a fine place to stay. It's not especially glamorous, cheap, or very near downtown Abingdon, but it's comfortable. The beds were nice -- I slept quite well. The shower head has good water pressure (always important). The breakfast was definitely good -- glad they had some "healthier" options! Although no gym is available on the premises, you can use one across the street (busy Highway 11 -- just getting across can count as your warm-up!!) for $5/visit. The staff was very friendly and generally helpful. Not a bad place to stay in the area.

Just like the folks in Abingdon, this is a friendly hotel. Every time we passed through the lobby or walked down the hall, we were greeted by the staff. They asked about our day, asked if everything was satisfactory, and thanked us for staying with them. Our room was just as impressive. It was so huge that I thought we might need binoculars to see the tv. In addition to the king bed, we had a table and chairs, two recliners, and a refrigerator. The bathroom was likewise spacious with a shower rather than a tub. Complimentary breakfast had plenty to choose from, and the attendant kept everything filled promptly. We would definitely choose HIE Abingdon again.
