We just returned from a long weekend at the Alta Lodge and I can't say enough good things about this place! I'm almost hesitant to write anything because I don't want to let any more people in on the secret (we barely got a room this trip b/c it was so packed!), but I was so impressed that I had to share...

First, I have to say that if you're looking for a fancy 5-star ski lodge, this is probably not the place for you. Alta Lodge is definitely nice, but does have a slightly more rustic, old-school feel. To be honest, this is precisely the reason we loved it! We booked our ski trip late and ended up getting the last room available for the first 2 nights and then had to switch to a different room for the last night. Apparently this is a pretty popular place and we were lucky to get in at all! Our first room was fantastic...we had a corner room with a spectacular view of the slopes, a fireplace, a VERY comfortable bed, and a nice bathroom with a separate extra vanity area. Our second room was a slight step down, but still very nice with a great view of the mountains opposite the slopes and again a nice bed and bathroom. The rooms do not have TVs, but it wasn't an issue for us at all. They do have a large flat-screen TV in a lounge room off the lobby, so we could watch the NCAA basketball tournament games at night...plus, it was kind of fun to watch TV with the other guests and make friends. I thought the prices were very reasonable...$500 for the first room and $400 for the second, and that includes a hot breakfast and dinner! For a ski-in, ski-out lodge with meals included, I'm not sure how you do much better.

The food at the Lodge was fantastic!!! What a perfect way to start off a day of skiing with a delicious hot breakfast...and end it with a fabulous four-course dinner! It was really nice to not have to worry about cooking meals or buying groceries...you just walk up to the community dining room and voila, breakfast/dinner is served! Breakfast is a hot buffet containing a myriad of yummy food (eggs, pancakes, french toast, bacon, etc, etc, etc), but if you are craving something different, all you have to do is ask and the kitchen will prepare anything on request! The dinner menu changes daily, but always has soup, salad, entree (3 choices) and a dessert. All three dinners we had were delicious! The food and the atmosphere make you feel like you're at a fancy restaurant, but it's nice because you don't have to get dressed up and it's right there at the lodge.

The service at Alta Lodge was great, as well. The staff is very friendly and helpful...they really go above and beyond to make sure your stay is perfect. We had a 6am flight out on the last day and we knew we would be hungry missing breakfast, so we asked the front desk if we could get some dry cereal to eat when we got up the next morning. They offered to do way more than that, laying out a variety of fresh fruit, cereal, and a carafe of milk on ice in the lobby the night before...just for us! You just don't get this kind of above-and-beyond service at most places.

I also loved the fact that the lodge is ski-in, ski-out. They provide a locker downstairs for your skis and boots, so all you have to do is walk out, put your skis on, and ski down a small hill to the Collins lift. Then there is a tow rope that pulls you back up when you get home in the afternoon...pretty convenient!

And last but not least, I should mention that the lodge has 2 very large hot tubs, which we enjoyed every evening after skiing. They were never overcrowded and were the perfect relief for sore muscles after a hard day's work. They also have sauna rooms for men & women, but we just stuck to the hot tubs.

This was my first time staying at the Alta Lodge, but it will definitely not be the last! I can't wait to get back to my new favorite lodge at the best ski mountain in the country!

Alta lodge is a poorly run pit. We paid $433 a night for a room that consisted of four bunk beds constructed out of 2 by 4s and plywood. It was so narrow that I could stand in the middle of the room and touch the walls on either side. The bathroom was down the hall They do provide pillows and sheets.

On our last night, we were given a chance to upgrade to a room with a queen and a double bed for $750 a night. We passed on that and will always pass on the Alta Lodge going forward.

My family of four spent 4 nights at Alta Lodge in April. We booked our rooms at the last minute. Though the hotel is quirky -- the lobby is about 3 flights down from the street (with no elevator), no TVs in the rooms, unusual layout of property -- we enjoyed our stay and would happily return. The staff could not have been more helpful, even picking up a prescription for us at Snowbird and saving us a delicious pasta dinner when we arrived late our first night. The rooms are very comfortable and very quiet. Our kids never missed the TV. The food is very good, though the special kids' dinner is better for younger kids (not our 10- and 12-year-olds). And the skiing was great!

When I called the hotel, they told me they were rustic, they have no TV's or kitchenettes. I stayed at this hotel 25 years ago, when I was a kid, and the furnishings were outdated then. I think it is the exact same furniture. The layout is awkward, the halls are dimly lit. Some halls are wallpapered with jute carpeting, others are cinder blocks that have been painted white. The furniture seems like Salvation Army rejects. Not antique or old and funky, but just poor furnishings.

When we got there at 11:00 am I checked the hot tub. It was cold. I asked them to turn up the heat. By evening it was warm, but still cooler than my normal bath. The jets did not work, and the sauna was never turned on.

The view is great, and the bedding was comfortable. We paid for the $20 brunch. It was ok, but I would recommend walking up the street to the Rustler. I think it may be $2 more, but the setting is much nicer, and I think the food was better.

Off season rates are about half the price, but I would never again pay $150 much less $300!!!! I love to ski at Alta, but I would stay down the street at Snowbird if I were to do it again.

Management Response

Hi. My name is Cliff Curry and I’m General Manager of Alta Lodge. After reading the review by crunchyhippie, I’d like to make a few comments.

I agree that our lobby furniture has been outdated – although I think crunchyhippie’s description is a bit harsh. In any case, we are completely remodeling our lobby, side lobby and front desk areas this spring, and over the past year we have been replacing guest room furnishings in stages. As far as the wall coverings in some hallway areas, again I agree: those are overdue for removal and redecorating. Those areas are planned for renovation within the next year or so. Our new lobby, to be completed in early June 2007, will have a completely fresh look featuring natural and sustainable materials. Our new look will be a departure from typical ski lodge design, while remaining true to our original 1939 architecture and the mountain environment.

I think the other comments in crunchyhippie’s review leave the wrong impression of Alta Lodge. I’m sorry that the hot tub was not hot when crunchyhippie checked in last summer, but please don’t get the impression that we don’t give full attention to our facilities. I suppose this type of oversight can happen in any hotel, but in fact we have a very professional and dedicated staff who put a lot of attention and energy into both our facilities and our guest experience. As for the sauna, it is true that we don’t turn it on in the summer until requested, as part our overall effort to minimize our carbon footprint.

We’re open in winter and summer. In the winter, we’re a bustling traditional ski lodge, and in the summer we are a quiet mountain inn offering weddings, conferences, Sunday Brunch and lodging. Over 80% of our guests return every year – we have a loyal following around the country and the world, as well as locally.

Our Lodge is an historic building, but it’s also a thriving, authentic place that’s filled with the energy of skiing and the mountains. We have the nicest employees, the best personal guest service and the highest quality dining experience around. To see some recent press reviews of the Lodge, I’d like to invite you to take a look at the Alta Lodge website.

Thanks for reading! -Cliff
