Alta lodge is a poorly run pit. We paid $433 a night for a room that consisted of four bunk beds constructed out of 2 by 4s and plywood. It was so narrow that I could stand in the middle of the room and touch the walls on either side. The bathroom was down the hall They do provide pillows and sheets.

On our last night, we were given a chance to upgrade to a room with a queen and a double bed for $750 a night. We passed on that and will always pass on the Alta Lodge going forward.

My family of four spent 4 nights at Alta Lodge in April. We booked our rooms at the last minute. Though the hotel is quirky -- the lobby is about 3 flights down from the street (with no elevator), no TVs in the rooms, unusual layout of property -- we enjoyed our stay and would happily return. The staff could not have been more helpful, even picking up a prescription for us at Snowbird and saving us a delicious pasta dinner when we arrived late our first night. The rooms are very comfortable and very quiet. Our kids never missed the TV. The food is very good, though the special kids' dinner is better for younger kids (not our 10- and 12-year-olds). And the skiing was great!

When I called the hotel, they told me they were rustic, they have no TV's or kitchenettes. I stayed at this hotel 25 years ago, when I was a kid, and the furnishings were outdated then. I think it is the exact same furniture. The layout is awkward, the halls are dimly lit. Some halls are wallpapered with jute carpeting, others are cinder blocks that have been painted white. The furniture seems like Salvation Army rejects. Not antique or old and funky, but just poor furnishings.

When we got there at 11:00 am I checked the hot tub. It was cold. I asked them to turn up the heat. By evening it was warm, but still cooler than my normal bath. The jets did not work, and the sauna was never turned on.

The view is great, and the bedding was comfortable. We paid for the $20 brunch. It was ok, but I would recommend walking up the street to the Rustler. I think it may be $2 more, but the setting is much nicer, and I think the food was better.

Off season rates are about half the price, but I would never again pay $150 much less $300!!!! I love to ski at Alta, but I would stay down the street at Snowbird if I were to do it again.

Management Response

Hi. My name is Cliff Curry and I’m General Manager of Alta Lodge. After reading the review by crunchyhippie, I’d like to make a few comments.

I agree that our lobby furniture has been outdated – although I think crunchyhippie’s description is a bit harsh. In any case, we are completely remodeling our lobby, side lobby and front desk areas this spring, and over the past year we have been replacing guest room furnishings in stages. As far as the wall coverings in some hallway areas, again I agree: those are overdue for removal and redecorating. Those areas are planned for renovation within the next year or so. Our new lobby, to be completed in early June 2007, will have a completely fresh look featuring natural and sustainable materials. Our new look will be a departure from typical ski lodge design, while remaining true to our original 1939 architecture and the mountain environment.

I think the other comments in crunchyhippie’s review leave the wrong impression of Alta Lodge. I’m sorry that the hot tub was not hot when crunchyhippie checked in last summer, but please don’t get the impression that we don’t give full attention to our facilities. I suppose this type of oversight can happen in any hotel, but in fact we have a very professional and dedicated staff who put a lot of attention and energy into both our facilities and our guest experience. As for the sauna, it is true that we don’t turn it on in the summer until requested, as part our overall effort to minimize our carbon footprint.

We’re open in winter and summer. In the winter, we’re a bustling traditional ski lodge, and in the summer we are a quiet mountain inn offering weddings, conferences, Sunday Brunch and lodging. Over 80% of our guests return every year – we have a loyal following around the country and the world, as well as locally.

Our Lodge is an historic building, but it’s also a thriving, authentic place that’s filled with the energy of skiing and the mountains. We have the nicest employees, the best personal guest service and the highest quality dining experience around. To see some recent press reviews of the Lodge, I’d like to invite you to take a look at the Alta Lodge website.

Thanks for reading! -Cliff
