Very nice wildlife refuge area along the coast a couple of hours north of Corpus Christi. The lady working the office was very friendly and knowledgeable, and gave us fair warning that there was a new batch of mosquitos out the day we went. Spotted a number of deer, a good variety of birds, a few alligators, an oppossum, and an armadillo. Did have a very nice picnic lunch in the picnic area. Unfortunately, their picnic tables are in poor condition, quite dirty with old and new wasp nests underneath. Luckily, we had our own chairs in the back of the car and they did nicely. Be careful not to feed the raccoons; we walked over near the shore and came back and found one munching on a sandwich right near our car. (It wan't our sandwich, but someone had left one for him.)
The lady was right about the mosquitos. Our whole trip to the Corpus area, they were ruthless, and the day we went to the refuge, we coated on the deep woods Off, but the mosquitoes were undaunted. Even in direct sunlight, they were swarming all over us, and biting quite a bit too. Occasionally, the wind would get strong enough to blow them away and give us a break, but they literally sent us running out of one trail, they were so thick and fierce. We would love to go back with hats with mosquito netting-I'm not kidding! Luckily for those unable to take the heat and the bloodsucking, they have a very nice auto loop. Well worth the drive to the remote location.
