“Expected Better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

The Driskill is a grand hotel located in the centre of Austin, very old worldly. The staff are wonderful, particularly at the front desk, who had to deal with some sensitive issues with our booking and did so in a stress free manner. The public rooms are very attractive with high ceilings although the bedrooms are certainly not nearly as grand. In our case we endured very cold and noisy air- conditioning and also found the lighting to be unsatisfactory. There were plenty of lights but even when all were turned on we found it difficult to see.
The breakfast was in a restaurant open to the public and consequently no buffet was available. For travellers who need to get on the road early this represents a problem because it takes much longer to be fed. Also the system of allocating tables to particular servers can create problems if big groups sit together.
Our experience checking out was mixed. One item on the bill needed to be reversed and although the staff were great it took too long. It also took too long for our car to arrive from the valet parking.
Austin is a great town and the Driskill well located but its perhaps more suited to business travellers than road trippers

Thank you so much for your time in reviewing your stay at The Driskill. We do offer a buffet breakfast option for private groups and events, however, for individual travelers, we provide a few options: to-go pastries & coffee are available in our 1886 Cafe & Bakery, along with a traditional sit-down restaurant experience, or a room-service breakfast can be packed to take along for the day ahead. We do appreciate your thoughts on the timing for valet & check-out procedures, and will share them with our team, as well as your suggestions on lighting options and volume in-room. @we very much appreciate your feedback and suggestions for ways to improve your next stay with us. The bed was fabulous. The blankets were great. The hotel was absolutely spotless. This hotel is in a great location. We left our car with the valet and never called for it until time to leave. Altogether great place to stay.

We stayed there for one night in August. We enjoyed our stay because the room was modern and clean. The bedding was very nice. I can't really complain about anything and I recommend this place to anyone needing a hotel in Austin.

We stayed here in April and booked a Cityscape room. They lost our reservation and the day before we arrived communicated they had found it. When we arrived the Cityscape room with a view of the city we reserved was not as described on the Website. The room resembled the Curio room ("servants quarters" as described on Website) and the view was that of a parking lot. The "queen" size bed was a double sized bed or as the manager put it when I called it is a "European" queen. I am European and in Europe a queen size bed is the same as in America. Overall it was a big disappointment reinforced by the lack of customer service or responsiveness from management. For the prices there are much nicer hotels within the same area.

The hotel was nice - but for the money expected more on the service end. Went to a lot of trouble 6 months in advance to book a room for my 85 year old mother that was handicap accessible and next door to a room for my husband and I. Checked back twice to make sure we had those rooms and that it was noted on our reservation. Checked back a week before our trip - and was assured AGAIN that we would be next door to each other and my Mother would have a handicapped accessible room. You guessed it - they did NOT have a room for my mother - they said they 'upgraded us' and we walked into the rooms - and no way would it have worked. If a nice manager named Will hadn't helped us and sorted out the mess - the clerks at the front had told us nothing else was available. 2nd problem - don't call front desk to have valet service pull car around - three times and I learned - call valet station direct. Message through the front desk to valet station wasn't passed on.
Thank you Will for your help with the room! No thank you to the rest of the front desk.

Room Tip: if you request a handicap room - verify verify verify

Very impressive building, beautiful interior and in a good location. Lovely valet staff. But personally in 105 degrees I'd book a hotel with a pool in future and go a little less fancy - the Radisson by the bats bridge looked fun. And be warned the concierge doesn't open till 10am. Did like the Royal Blue Coffee Shop behind the Driskill on Congress though for healthy food.

This is one of the Historic buildings in downtown Austin. The building architecture and detail is amazing. It was almost like sleeping in a museum. My wife and I love antique furniture and atmosphere and this hotel did not disappoint. Will stay here again.
