We stayed here for 2 nights on 3/28,29. First time to Austin. It worked out perfect. The price was reasonable too. Marriott offers a guaranty if you find the rate cheaper - they will match and give you an additional 20% off. After booking the room for $229, I found it for $199 on priceline.com. I inquired and price was reduced to $150 a night. The room layout could have been situated better. The small bathroom was right by the bed so the other person always had the bathroom light in their eye. No fan in the bathroom so mirror was always fogged up. It has a great location to walk to bars/restaurants and Congress bridge to see the bats. We arrived at the bridge at 7:30 pm and about 15 min later, bats came flying out. Bats will come out at dusk. Hotel included a buffet breakfast with a good selection of hot and cold foods. Also, included was an evening cocktail hour from 5 - 7 pm with free beer/wine and little munchies. There is a Marriott Courtyard attached to the Residence Inn. I'm sure if you stay there, you could still get the included freebies here. Parking is a little high but we managed to escape the first night. There are meters right across the street that do not charge between 5:30 pm and 8:30 am. There was a spot when we arrived so left it there overnight and moved the car in the morning to the garage. We ate at The Driskill for lunch (best hamburger/banana split) and reasonable. Did the duck boat tour. The water part was a little disappointing. All you do is go in the water, and the driver lets a few people steer in circles and then you come out. We were bored. If you do go, sit on the passenger side of the boat for better views.

“Good points and bad points”

Residence Inn Austin Downtown/Convention Center

Stayed here for 9 days in November 2006

Good Points
- New hotel, very clean
- Nice rooftop terrace
- Excellent gym
- Laundry on site
- Well equipped room - microwave, fridge, oven, free wireless internet, etc
- Massive rooms
- Completely non smoking

Bad points
- Only valet parking was available when we stayed. Valet staff work hard, but can't handle the load in peak times, so 5 min wait to get your car in off peak time, up to 25 minutes at peak time on Sunday after breakfast. They need to open up self parking
- No real room service. Can order snacky things from Champions Bar downstairs. They need to work with the local area restuarants to offer better quality room service
- Small pool

Overall the Hilton next door is better, mainly due to the parking problems and lack of room service. If they can sort those out then this hotel would be the choice.

“Lovely studio suite in brand new hotel...”

I have to say it was an absolute pleasure to stay in this brand new hotel which opened a couple of weeks ago in downtown Austin. Marriott have two hotels next to each other, the Courtyard which has usual hotel bedrooms and this Residence Inn which has studios and one or two bedrrom suites.

I had a studio suite on the 11th floor giving me great city views, there is a full kitchen including a dishwasher, a sitting area, sleeping area with a lovely King size comfortable bed and a lovely large bathroom. I could not fault the room at all and of course being so new everything was spotlessly clean and fresh.

It was an added bonus that they have computers set up for free internet access in the foyer of each hotel, they charge for Internet access through the television but wireless is free if you have your own laptop with you. Also since I was in the middle of a longer trip it was perfect for me that they had washing machines and dryers on the 2nd floor and they even gave away free detergent, it was only a dollar to use each machine.

Minor point I was surpised that the swimming pool was so small, maximum capacity of 19 people according to the sign but with three or four people in there everyone would have been bumping into each other ! I got the feeling it was built so they could say that they had one rather than looking to provide much of a facility.

The location on 4th Street is excellent for downtown Austin and you can pretty much walk to everywhere from there.

By the way I ate in the Champions Sports Bar in the Courtyard Hotel a couple of times, food was just passable but not fantastic however it is very conveniant if you are staying there and want to grab a quick bite. One yucky point was that I saw a cockroach run by me which I pointed out to a waitress, she grabbed it and told me it was just a Cricket... eeerrrr yes right. I know a cockroach when Isee one ! There are hundreds of the on the streets so I guess it is hard to keep them out of anywhere really.
