“Great Mexican Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

Go hungry because you will eat everything! And the stuffed avocado is amazing!
We got there early and were seated right away but I can see there being a long wait later in the evening.

“Best Brunch Ever”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2014

Austin is a town for brunching. I've been brunching here for over 30 yrs and am accustomed to hour-long waits. When we arrived around noon, we were seated immediately. We ordered drinks and sides of bacon (part of the brunch experience) and made our way to the buffets. Let me say first off that yes, buffets are usually bottomfeeding, lowest denominator feeding troughs. You've heard of Golden Corral, etc. This is not the case at Trudy's.

We grabbed our plates, nice Motown music was playing as we loaded up on french toast, migas, chilaquiles, panko fried catfish, sauteed veggies, bread pudding, spicy cole slaw, lemon bars, tortilla soup, enchiladas, etc. Everything you can imagine. All high quality foods for about $12 per person, which was ridiculously insane only 2 yrs ago, but suddenly $12 seems normal in the food industry. Our server's only job was to refill our tea, and she was mediocre at that, but don't let Austin's weird pierced liberal characters ruin your experience. The food is amazing. The worst part is that my belly never has enough room for two full plates. It always leaves me wishing I were a cow with four stomachs. There is something for everyone here. Nothing disappoints. In fact, when we saw an adjacent table order entrees instead of brunch, I wanted to go shake them and ask if they had just suffered contusions because WHY OH WHY would one ever NOT want Trudy's Buffet?

“Excellent for Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2014

Nice breakfast selection on weekends. Inexpensive. Very good Guatemala coffee. Good service. The place needs bigger restrooms.

“Mexican Martinis are Super”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2014

Even though we had to wait for a table because the restaurant has opened setting, the wait was worth it. The waiters let us know when customers were about to leave so that we could be prepared to "grab" a table. Martinis are inexpensive and copious. I ordered the spinach/mushroom quesadillas. They were delicious. The best vegetarian quesadilla I have had in quite a while!

“Absolutely bizarre service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2014

Trudy's appears to be very popular and is a nice enough place with decent decor. Our meal started a little substandard with chips that were cold, but we overlooked that. My wife ordered a margarita for the two of us, and she thought her's was a bit off in taste. I found them drinkable but not great, and suggested she ask for another. Notifying our waiter he told us he couldn't directly return it but had to follow, "a protocol". We hadn't a clue what he meant, but ten minutes later a manager type stopped by and asked her what the issue was. She just explained it wasn't for her and she was happy to finish it and would like another of a different recipe. After another 10 minutes, nothing arrived and we were revisited by our waiter, who took her order (again) for a new drink. Another 10 minutes went by and the waiter returned to ask if she wanted another, to which she said she reminder him (this makes three times) she'd ordered another ten minutes before. Another ten minutes went by and the manager returned. We told him to forget the drink we were about to leave.

This review of course says nothing about food, which we order and ate during this time. We found the food fairly good, a bit over salted and strong but decent. At every point we interacted with our waiter it just got weird though. With all due respect he seemed to have some issue with communication.

Overall I'd call the place average, but with the really bizarre service I doubt we would return. This was probably luck of the draw and your milage may vary a lot. But, given the manager was well aware that things weren't going well and they did little to fix it, you should probably expect the same. I should say also, this is very non-standard for Austin. In general if you have an issue with a drink, you'll have a replacement in 2 minutes.
