Right around the corner from home, we have eaten here many times in the last 7 years. I am long over due to tell folks how good this place is. Locally owned and nestled between a Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express, Freda's has been a welcome island of dining in NW Austin for a number of years. Locally owned with a casual-upscale feel, the staff is always attentive and the food delicious. The ambiance is warm with the heavy wood beams and tall windows. They have a great patio off the bar where live music is available on the weekends (after all, this is Austin - the "live music capital of the world"). They also have a great room for private meetings, group dinners, etc... Great appetizers to try include the Spinach Artichoke Dip and the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms. The Seafood Gumbo is also terrific. Entrees run the gamut of seafood, but my particular favorites include the Pecan Tilapia, Grilled Shrimp, Mango Tilapia, Catfish & Coconut Shrimp, and Blackened Catfish. Almost all entrees are available in a lunch portion at a reduced price. But if you need a red meat fix, try the Black Angus Steak Burger. Really good! The Grilled Tilapia sandwich is also a treat. If you want something with a New Orleans flair, try the Bourbon Pasta with Blackened Shrimp. You will think you are in the French Quarter. Freda's also has a killer Sunday Brunch so bring your appetite.
For an after-dinner or after-work cocktail, the bar area is warm and inviting. Again, the staff is friendly and the patio is great for conversation weather permitting.
Don't miss this one if you are staying/working in the NW Austin area.
