“Give it a try, I guarantee you'll come back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

Not a better Vietnamese restaurant in Austin..Delicious, authentic, fresh,....... all cliche but true. The crepes in the appetizer section make a wonderful meal. Totally different than a traditional french crepe...crispy, light, stuffed with fresh veggies and chicken or seafood if you like. They are served with lettuce wraps, fresh bean sprouts, mint, cucumber and fish sauce. AMAZING!!! Very reasonable, quaint, and inviting.

“Is this what they mean by "slow food"?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2012

I like Sunflower's food. It just takes forever to get it, and you and your friends will all get your food at different times. The service is unbearably indifferent and vague at this strip mall joint. But if you don't mind being fed randomly and slowly, the food is pretty darn tasty. Crepe, fish dishes, bun bowls. Don't look too closely at the floors and corners, though a recent fire means it at least got some fresh paint. But it's usually pretty dirty.

“Tasteful dishes but service could get much better!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011

To cut right to the chase, if you like tasteful but non greasy food, exotic but not spicy hot food, and a little french fusion taste, this is the one! We actually dined at this Vietnamese restaurant a lot. In the last ten years or so, we literally visited this restaurant at least once a month. So much to say how much we loved their food, and we still do. It has a distinct taste, when compared to other Vietnamese, Chinese or Thai restaurants. It is not 100% Vietnamese either. I would say it is a little bit, just a little bit, of a fusion (french/vietnamese) taste. We are food lovers (!), and we dine out a lot - like, 3 times a week, literally every week during the weekend. This restaurant ranks up high on our list, which also includes T&S Seafood, Pho Viet (a twin brother of Sunflower from the North side of Austin - in Round Rock actually), HoHo (a twin sister to DinHo), and Thamnak Thai (which I will review separately).
When you arrive to the restaurant, you will find plenty of parking spaces, and although the strip mall looks a little dark at night times, the restaurant is located in a safe strip mall, right by Target and a few other Asian restaurants, most notably the Chinese DinHo and the Vietnamse Pho Van.
Inside, the restaurant is small by any standard. There are at most a dozen tables for a capacity of about 50 guests. As a result, the tables a very close to each others, but the ambiance is pretty good, particularly when it is not packed! Expect it to be crowded during the weekend. If food and ambiance are good, unfortunately their service could be a little better. They serve their food quite quickly, even when they are packed, but the waiters just seem to lack enthusiasm. We'd love to see more energy, more of a "love to serve" from their waiters. But this is far from the point where you wouldn't like to come back - it's just that such good a food should come along with some better and more fun attitude from the people who serve them.
Now, the food! I'd say most if not all items on their menu are good, if not great! Their sea bass dish is a must try. Any tofu or vegetarian dish is also very tasteful. Large garlic and buttered shrimps over pasta is also delicious. Now I am realizing that it's hard for me to point out one that we don't like! Again, keep in mind this is the kind of Vietnamese restaurant where you should not expect to come to order fried rice or orange chicken. For this, DinHo next door is a great choice.
You can tell this is a good restaurant by their own repeated guests. Most guests, as we've noticed it, know exactly what to order from them. Bon Appetit!

“A+ food, C to C+ service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2010

Ate at Sunflower on 03.27.10, the food is every bit as delicious as when lived in Austin. Their clay pot/rice dish is huge portion and great flavor. Options are available for both meat eaters and vegetarians (served w/ tasty tofu).

The service, as it was back when, is below par. They are not understaffed, and the restaurant is not huge, they just don't come around as frequently as in other restaurants. The food, though, trumps the mediocre service. It's absolutely worth it.
